Alright, so I've got this Typhoon III RO/DI unit which does 75GPD, it says to never exceed this amount.

 

So after I make 75 gallons in one sitting I need to wait 24 hours to make anymore? What are the rules or best practice on these?

 

Also, how exact do you need to be? My tank is ~80 gallons in the display and I have no way to measure the water coming from the RODI unit, if I'm over a little what kind of harm am I looking at?

Unless I read the post wrong your water goes straight into your tank? I would avoid this because on 3 seprate occassoins I've left the ro/di machine on and flooded my basement. A float valve and auto topoff would be a much better idea imop.

I should have clarified better. Right now I'm just going to be doing the initial fill up of the tank, so I am going directly into it. After this initial fill up I'm going to be using a top off system.

If you use the correct water pressure, you'll only be able to make 75 gpd- what it's rated for. If you make 150 gpd, you're putting twice the recommended pressure through it.

So are you saying the water should not be turned full blast? I've never seen that anywhere. I han and AWI Mighty Mite that is supposed to be 2gph and it puts out about 4gph, water full blast.

They are designed to run a certain amount through them. That's what a pressure gauge is for. If you don't run enough pressure, or run too much pressure, it bypasses the membrane.

I'd recommend looking at the FAQ about RO/DI on Reefcentral.

In the outlet waste water line of any RO unit you need to match the GPD Flow Restrictor to GPD of membrane. The physical housing can fit almost any GPD size of membrane and pre-filters. However, as stated, if you don't use correct Flow Restrictor, you will push to much water through the membrane and not get benefits of it as intended.

Cool! Well I have the Typhoon III and according to AWI's website it has one of these:

It's supposed to be a flow restrictor and fast flush. So is it safe to just turn on the unit and let it run as long as necessary to fill the tank?

Yes! IF it's a NEW RO/DI (never used) I would run a few gallons in bucket and dump it before runing into tank just to be safe and let it flush self so to speak (not running it in flush mode) but running in normal production mode.

Alright, I've already done that a couple times to make sure. I just wanted to be 100% sure before I went forward. I'm planning on draining the tap water out of my tank and cleaning out any of the plastic in there and beginning to fill it with RODI. I remember the warning that said not to make more than 75 GPD so I wasn't sure what that meant specifically.

What about a reservoir tank? Does it actually take in water like an accumulator and what pressure is best to run the tank? Since I use mine for dual purpose I tap off the RO unit for drinking water and the DI or last stage for the tank which then goes into a bucket when I need to do a water change or top off.

I remember the warning that said not to make more than 75 GPD so I wasn't sure what that meant specifically.

I've owned a Typhoon III for many years and I've conducted several group buys where dozens of these units have been purchased. I don't recall any warnings about limiting output to xx gallons per day. They do recommend a limit on how high your water pressure should be and I think it is 75psi. Could that be what you read?

What Bob said. The warning is about not exeeding 75 Psi and not about how many gallons per day you will produce. I also have a Typhoon III and it is what is written on the label: "Do not exeed 75 PSI" :)
