so i was browsing the fish section on LA and all of a sudden i thought about my mandarin fish and realized that i have not seen him for the past few days..i then grabbed my flashlight and headed for the fish room(my office) and started shining it in the usual spots where he sleeps and didn't see him..i looked in every little nook and cranny that i could possibly shine the light into and still he was nowhere to be found..i then had to resort to the last option and shine the flashlight around the outside of the tank and sure enough i see a shriveled piece of something in the shape of a fish in a tank stand that was right next to the tank..i then picked it up and it was pretty dried up like it had been there for awhile but i saw enough to determine that it was him..really sucks because he was one of my favorites...

are mandarins known to jump?

Ah, that sucks. I guess that any fish will jump if startled, though I wouldn't have thought that a mandarin would have it in him...

Sorry to hear about the suicide... it really sux! When I first bought my mandarin, I remember that it would jump around in the bag from being scared during the acclimation process.

Condolences. I hate that feeling when you first see it, confirming your fears, and your heart sinks. Whether it's a jumper or a powerhead disaster or a slow death from disease. It's never easy to see a pet die and hard not to feel responsible. In our hobby it comes with the territory, I guess.

Sorry to hear. I didn't think mandarins would be jumpers, but mine jumped into my overflow and now lives in my sump. He's healthy but I need a flashlight to see him.

I wouldn't have expected them to be jumpers either, mine stopped eating, someone told me to put him in with the other fish instead of in the fuge... that was a mistake I shouldn't have listened to. Everyone said oh the other fish will avoid him because of the coloration, bet me... they beat the crap out of him and although I pulled him back out and nursed him, about 3 days later he died.

I still haven't gotten another mandarin and yes, they are one of my favorites.

sorry to hear about the jumper. my fish have always ignored any mandarin i have kept. they do jump though. not like wrasses but if they are startled...

thanks for the kind words everyone..I am thinking about replacing him possibly with a target mandarin this time..they are just too cool to not have especially with the ridiculous pod population I have in my tank...

so sad, that's one of my favorite fish also and hope to have it one day in my tank.
