SeanCallan October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 (edited) Hey Guys, The last thing I have remaining to purchase before my tank is completed is my ozone, anyone have any suggestion as to who makes the best and which would be best suited for my 80g setup? I plan to have the ozone connect to the skimmer (Tunze 9010) intake, thoughts? Thanks! Sean Edited October 30, 2008 by SeanCallan
zygote2k October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 (edited) goin old school eh? no need for ozone anymore. maybe the plastic in the skimmer isn't or is ozone compatible? Edited October 30, 2008 by zygote2k
Brian Ward October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 How is ozone old school? Why is there no need for it anymore? My understanding is that it's still one of the best ways to keep the water crystal clear. As far as injecting in the skimmer - that's how most people do it, but you need to be sure the acrylic you skimmer is made from will tolerate the ozone.

From what I've been told the Tunze 9010 has a port for Ozone on it, so I'm assuming it can handle it. I'll do some further research. As for being old school, that's very much news to me. I guess Zeovit is "new" ?
geofloors October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 (edited) I was using a Red Sea 100mg unit but recently picked up a 200mg Ozotech unit. The new unit is very nice but would recommend the Red Sea unit aswell. Mine is controlled by my ACIII so I don't need a unit with a controller built in. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Ozotech-ozon...oduct_info.html George Edited October 30, 2008 by geofloors
flowerseller October 30, 2008 October 30, 2008 If it's a Tunze, it's ozone compatible. UV and carbon will also help keep your water crystal clear like ozone. If you use ozone, you're using carbon anyway.
SeanCallan October 30, 2008 Author October 30, 2008 I plan on running carbon already and I have a UV unit from yauger but its awful big. I'm getting all kinds of mixed input on what to run. I plan to have a very small number of fish which is why a number of folks have dissuaded me from using UV (which they say is better for fish tanks). I was unaware that UV + Carbon was roughly the equivalent of Ozone.

You can run all or none and still have an awesome tank. I personally believe all tanks should use UV, and I have 99% of my time in this hobby.
zygote2k October 31, 2008 October 31, 2008 I use the KISS system and it works great for me. Fresh carbon on a bi-monthly basis keeps water crystal clear and is very easy, convenient and cheap. Go natural- it's so much easier and more cost effective. You can sink your money into corals instead.

Right I'm debating running this UV unit, it's 25W on my 80 gallon system and it's almost as long as my sump. It may be a little overkill.
gastone October 31, 2008 October 31, 2008 I went through a lot of carbon when running ozone. I jerry-rigged up my skimmer cup collection lid to hold about 1-1.25 cups of carbon. I also added a filter sock to the bottom of my skimmer ouput pipe and added more carbon there, as well as to the top of the level adjustment pipe (old ER) skimmer. Lotsa carbon. Instead of using silica dessicant, try this stuff: http://www.drierite.com/default.cfm?gclid=...CFQgRFQodEEGT3g Garrett.
