DaveS October 25, 2008 October 25, 2008 Just wanted to start a thread where people could talk about how to ship frags. Obviously we'd be talking about Next Day type stuff. Depending on time of year, a heat/cold pack would be good. Any one got input about bagging/packing the frags?
dtfleming October 25, 2008 October 25, 2008 Use a 6x6x6 or 12x12x8 box, can buy them from Walmart. line it with styrofoam found at Lowes or Home Depot. I use 2mil bags from kensfish.com, put newspaper in the bottom. I then double bag each coral to be shipped and place all in a bigger bag in the box. Be careful about placing corals close together so they dont bang against each other. Depending on the time of year I use a heat pack. Make sure its activated first and then I wrap it in a paper towel and place it on top of the bag of corals. Next place your styrofoam lid over top, make the heat pack can still breath. heatpacks can also be found at kensfish.com I usually get the 40hr ones. I DO NOT use an ice pack, the styrofoam will help keep the heat out. Always check the weather where your shipping to and make sure they can receive USPS express overnight. Here's a link on a step by step. LInky
reefmontalvo October 26, 2008 October 26, 2008 Glad to see this thread. It makes good refrence information in case you ever buy from a vendor in another part of the country, or you ship to a friend else where.
DaveS October 27, 2008 Author October 27, 2008 Not a bad thread that talks about how to pack a box of frags. How about some ideas on how to bag the frag(s)? I usually put mine in a bag with some water- enough to keep them submerged but not so much as to drive up the shipping costs. I've heard of others using very little water but wet newspapers to keep the moisture around. What do you guys think?
ReeferMan October 27, 2008 October 27, 2008 I use small bag filled almost full because if the box is turned on the side and the frag gets hung up on the bag it could be exposed to air for awhile and kill the frag. I use a cooler and newspaper to make sure the bags dont move around. Then I tap the cooler shut. Also make sure i mark each bag as to what the frag is. USPS Express is overnight to alot of areas and its the cheapest.
gastone October 27, 2008 October 27, 2008 Let's ask Rik how he ships frags. He does it quite frequently and I'm sure could offer his considerable knowledge. G.
