CHUBAKAH October 8, 2008 October 8, 2008 (edited) I read on RC quite a while ago that Oceanic salt mix has the highest numbers in all category's, so I'm wondering why I haven't seen anything about it posted on here, or CMAS? Anyone used, or using this product? Seems to me it would be really good for at least water changes to boost numbers, or be something you could add or mix with something else? blaze98 October 8, 2008 October 8, 2008 I have only read that it is very expensive, I never tried any though.
CHUBAKAH October 8, 2008 Author October 8, 2008 I have only read that it is very expensive, I never tried any though. $39.00 for a 200 gallon bucket at Bigalsonline as we speak. That is on sale from the normal $56.00 they normally charge, which does not seem too bad to me. I'm thinking one of our LFS could get it for us, for at least somewhere close to that.

I've bought (4) 200 gal buckets for $100 more than one time at That Fish Place. Just a matter of shopping/waiting. They have a "buy 3 get 1 free" salt sale periodically. For whatever reason, Oceanic is the only salt I've ever used. Always been satisfied. I've been through at least a dozen buckets. One thing I can say for sure is it dissolves nice and fast. tim

jason the filter freak October 8, 2008 October 8, 2008 ive used it before on my nano for a while and i cant say its better or worse instant ocean is just cheaper for me

I never test anything other than SG (for several years), and I don't keep SPS, so I may not the best guy to take advice from on this un... tim
CHUBAKAH October 9, 2008 Author October 9, 2008 One bump for the night crew. Anyone else have any feedback?
dtfleming October 9, 2008 October 9, 2008 I've been using it and its not anymore expensive then reef crystals, just depends on where you buy it. The cal and mg lvls are great with it and it mixes well, but the alk sucks. I have always had low alk with using this salt. Right now Im mixing Oceanic and trying the new D-D H20 salt. I only bought the small bucket of that because of the price, but the lvls are great on it.
cabrego October 9, 2008 October 9, 2008 I just started using it so I am not sure about number. I get my 90g mix jug for 21 dollaras at petsmart. Price match works wonders!
gastone October 9, 2008 October 9, 2008 I used to mix Oceanic and IO in a 50/50 to get the best of the calcium in Oceanic and the alk in IO. Of course this is predicated upon an even batch consistency... and let's just assume that quality control at the little salt factories isn't quite the same as quality control at Bentley. Now what I do I purchase salt brand X (or Y depending upon my mood), un-stratify by dumping back and forth from bucket to bucket, measure the level using whatever test brand I'm comfortable with and adjust the calcium, alk, and magnesium using supplements. I write down on the bucket how much of each I have to add to a batch (or per gallon) and then I've got the info for the next batch. Tada. G.
GaryL October 9, 2008 October 9, 2008 (edited) if you are using a different salt and plan on switching ...do it very slow especially if you have sps. i did like the jugs for the water though. i had alk issues also and switched back to IO. probably just for availability to me... if i had bioassay near me i would go back to it and stay with it. CHUBAKAH October 10, 2008 Author October 10, 2008 Thanks for all the feedback guys. I think I am going to stick with what I'm doing, and just keep supplementing.
