Sam August 7, 2008 August 7, 2008 Hello, I am new to WAMAS. I moved from MA (Was member of BRS) and had reef tanks for few years. I am planning 46G reef setup, primarily Softy and LPS. This tank is not drilled and not planning to drill as well. Having full blown setup before, I am trying to keep it simple this time (I know, it's never simple with reef ) Anyway, I am looking for HOB (Hang On Back) skimmer recommendations for my 46G tank. What's your recommendations?

What's your recommendations? Welcome to WAMAS! I am very happy with my Remora Pro. Skims very well, and is almost maintenance free. Only downside is the noise from the spray injection nozzle. It's fine in the den, but I wouldn't sleep in the same room with it.
jamesbuf August 7, 2008 August 7, 2008 The Remoras are pretty good, but like Dave mentioned, pretty noisy. My folk's had one in their living room and they got used to the noise. Its like a fan, your mind eventually blocks the sound out. I later upgraded them to a Deltec MCE600 and its much quieter, and a much better skimmer too. You can usually find them on RC between $300-350 used. It might be a little overkill on just a 46gal though, you might look into getting a MCE300. I haven't seen many of them used though, plus I can speak for the quality since I've never used one. Although I've never seen a deltec that wasn't a beast.
Brian Ward August 7, 2008 August 7, 2008 deltec mce200 is supposed to be the best hob skimmer you can buy... well, except for the mce300. hmm.. guess I meant the mce300 and 600
jason the filter freak August 7, 2008 August 7, 2008 if your tight on budget i love the remora pro with preskimmr by aqua c it works beautifuly with a mag five. if you have a limitless budget get the del tec hob skimmer
Sharkb8 August 7, 2008 August 7, 2008 Hmm, depends on budget, livestock and goals. If you want lots of livestock and need overskimming, I definitely recommend the MCE600. I have that on my 90g and it is awesome. If your needs are less extreme, I defer to the other recommendations above.
gmubeach August 7, 2008 August 7, 2008 I use the remora pro and love it:) couldn't afford high end skimmers though! oh and if your intreasted in joining wamas we have a members only section:) The fee is worth it in my opinion
Sam August 7, 2008 Author August 7, 2008 Thanks for your recommendations. Seems like remora is a good economical solution. Is noise that bad? Also what pump does it come with? Is that adequate or it needs to be upgraded? I am planning to attend next meeting and become a member
Sam August 7, 2008 Author August 7, 2008 Just checked out Deltec MCE300. I think that would be a good choice as well.

Kimchi Corals August 7, 2008 August 7, 2008 Be sure to remember that you get what you pay for......I spend several hundred dollars on a skimmer and just ended up buying the expensive skimmer in the end. I would have saved time and money if I had just started with the best.

I would have saved time and money if I had just started with the best. Oh man, to think about all the money I could have saved if I had listened to that advice when first starting up years ago. I did the same with my snowboarding equipment. Bought mediocre gear in the beginning and had to upgrade once that stuff started to fall apart after 1.5 seasons. I've officially learned my lesson. I won't make the same mistake once I get into diving. Hopefully we'll see you at the meeting on Saturday Sam.
