m3fan8ic July 22, 2008 July 22, 2008 My matted chromie's are laying eggs on rocks. This is the third time they are laying eggs and last two times there were eaten up by snails etc. What can I do to maybe protect some of these eggs? I've noticed that chromies are really protecting the rock and are showing a lot of aggressiveness towards other fish if they try to come close to the rock. It's just amazing to see how they react and how they laying eggs.
Integral9 July 22, 2008 July 22, 2008 That's incredible. Congratulations you're a dad / mom! As far as keeping the fry, yeah, Um, fat chance unless you have a breeder tank. Not only will mom and dad eat them, but so will everyone else and not to mention that you also seem to have some nest burglers. I had mated skunks at one point. They carry their young under their tails so nest burglers aren't a problem. But saving their fry is next to impossible w/out a breeder tank. Their fry basically became the biggest buffet my tank has ever seen. Not only were all the fishes involved, but so were mom and dad shrimp.
NightOwl July 22, 2008 July 22, 2008 Congrats...if you can get some pictures that would be great. My clowns lay on a regular basis but they lay in a weird spot where I can not get a good picture of the eggs. There is no saving them they are basically food for the tank unless you remove them.
m3fan8ic July 22, 2008 Author July 22, 2008 I'll try to take some pics..but they are so tiny and I don't have macro lense :(. The portion of rock looks like it's covered in snow .. I don't have a breeder tank :(.. I thought about placing a clear plastic cup with holes in it and scrapping some eggs/fry in it and see what happens? I actually sat infront of my tank for while and watched their behavior closely, wiggling their tail fins and movements etc. It was something I never noticed and saw before.
zygote2k July 23, 2008 July 23, 2008 My chromis' appear to be nesting and so far, they have killed a yellow tang, foxface, coral beauty, royal gramma, and kole tang. Nice to see that they are happy and content. Wish I could tell the other fish to stay away...
NightOwl July 23, 2008 July 23, 2008 zygote2k, Out of curiosity how big are your choromies? When my clown fish started spawning they tried to bully my yellow tang, yellowheaded jawfish, and glass cardinals. The cardinals were too fast and they killed my yellowheaded jawfish. The tang took to a while then slashed both of them. The male got the point right away but the female took two more slashes before getting the point. It's fun to see our animals mating but the aggressive behavior sucks :(.
MLazar July 24, 2008 July 24, 2008 Tagging along on this fascinating post. We have 5 chromis right now. Although we've had clowns lay eggs in the display tank in the past, the only fry we've ever had live was when Jon set up 4 gal plastic "tanks" for goby pairs. Once the eggs were laid, I think Jon removed the parents to another system. Early attempts did not fare well, but Jon was very successful just before he shipped overseas. I'm sure we'll try and breed again, would love to have success with chromis as well. Maureen
