civitan.erichanson June 13, 2008 June 13, 2008 Hi, I have a three head Duncan that I bought from Mr. Coral two weeks ago. It just spent a couple of days sucked up and it looked like my GTA might be menacing it (same with my Flower Pot). So I went to move it and the base broke off the plug. What I have now are three tubes and a flat bottom and a frag disc with a brown and pink ring on it. Does this sound like a clean break or trouble (sorry no pictures). Also, where do people place their Duncans? Thank you, Eric.
jason the filter freak June 13, 2008 June 13, 2008 just sounds like glue from the attachment to the frag disc
MLazar June 13, 2008 June 13, 2008 just sounds like glue from the attachment to the frag disc should he try and glue them back onto the disk? (I would clean debris off disk if yes).
civitan.erichanson June 13, 2008 Author June 13, 2008 That was what I thought, but I am also going to glue it to a rock, so what light/flow since trial and error is not working... thx
MLazar June 13, 2008 June 13, 2008 We've got our Duncans just under the middle of our tank (125 gal) in a med - low water flow area. They are amazing eaters and original 3-head purchase from AquaCo less than 2 months ago has 4 little sprouts now and they have doubled in size. I like them alot. Good luck with yours!

Are you feeding each head mysis??
Jon Lazar June 13, 2008 June 13, 2008 IME you don't HAVE to feed Duncans, but they will grow faster and be healthier if you do. They are ravenous eaters in the reef tank environment, so I assume this is how they are in nature too. Each head is a separate animal, so the food you give to one head is not shared with the others. I feed all my LPS mysid shrimp and cyclopeeze. There's a thread on RC where someone postulates that overfeeding Duncans will kill them, but that conclusion was reached through poor logic and I don't believe it. As far as placement goes, I read a thread by Eric Borneman recently where he stated that Duncans are a relatively deepwater species and should be placed in lower light. We have ours near the middle depth of the tank under fairly bright lighting in moderate flow and they are doing well. Perhaps they would do even better in a darker, calmer area of the tank, but they seem happy now. From the way you described the coral breaking off the plug, it sounds like the coral should be fine. I would reglue the branchy skeleton to a rock or something so it doesn't keep falling over in your tank. Sometimes corals just need a few days undisturbed before they act "happy". Jon Are you feeding each head mysis??
lanman June 14, 2008 June 14, 2008 I got a little piece from Mrcoral for free at the 'wamas social'. I just stuck the disk in my frag tank - have never purposely fed it, but it HAS grabbed some mysis once in a while. It's grown quite a lot - obviously doesn't take much care. Looks like it has about a half-dozen mouths on it. bob
