Guest iwantaneel March 22, 2008 March 22, 2008 Hi, I've been toying with maybe getting out of the hobby (it's been great, but I've got a lot going on these days . . . and my dear husband has not been enamored of the huge fish tank next to his TV). Thought I would float this here to see what the interest might be. I have a very nice 1 year old 120 gallon system. When setting it up, I did months of research and spared no expense - figured I'd do it once, and do it right. All equipment is 1 year old and in excellent condition. I am located in Bethesda, MD. Anyone want the whole kit and caboodle for $2,250? Price is firm and I won't piece out. I would love to see my "dream system" go to a nice person who wants to get into the hobby (or move up to a 120), but who doesn't necessarily have the $$$ to buy everything listed below brand new. I spent close to $5K all told. What I've got: 120 AGA tank (4 x 2 x 2) plus glass covers AGA standard black pine stand Sump: 40 gallon AGA breed tank as sump, divided once to make a skimmer section and a return section. System was professionally plumbed (thanks Jim of Tropical Fish World!) and is designed to accomodate a refugium down the line, if desired. Euroreef skimmer - RS135 9.5 Mag Drive pump (recently cleaned) Lights are Tek T-5s with brackets. Current set of bulbs are 2 months old. 100 lbs or so of live rock - an interesting mix of base, fugi, and tonga Stockman silencers (eliminates overflow noise) Spectrapure MaxCap RO/DI system A big ole Rubberneck to mix the water in Coralife Power Center (timer) Quarantine system: 10 gallon tank, iron stand, hang-on filter, heater 2 heaters, pump for mixing water, 2 nets, full-length tank gloves, algae scrapers, nearly full bucket of salt, other odds and ends - basically, everything you need Fish: yellow tang hippo tang coral beauty angel auriga butterfly bi-color dotty back (but he behaves himself) 2 ocerellis clowns lunar wrasse watchman goby (very cute guy) 7 green chromis emerald crab (never see him) various snails Everybody is happy and healthy and gets along nicely. Corals: 2 torch corals 1 strawberry coral (I'm forgetting the name but it's bright pink - very showy) 1 bubble coral 1 pulsing xenia Thanks for reading. I'd be happy to help with setting up and consult on maintenance. Just pm me here if interested. I have pics that I can e-mail. Cathie
Guest iwantaneel April 14, 2008 April 14, 2008 Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who read my post. I got exactly zero nibbles, which told me that if I really want to sell my set up, I'll need to lower the price, piece it out, or give it away. In the meanwhile, I managed to solve one of my dilemnas (soundproofing) so I'm going to hang tight for now. At the recommendation of my LFS, I bought one of those remote controlled outlets. Now, when we are watching TV, we can "click off" the tank (skimmer and pump) and watch in peace and quiet. But I have another question for you all -- if I do, down the line, decide to abandon ship, can anyone think of somewhere to donate the set-up and fish to? I've been told public schools can't take on a reef system, given the upkeep and also the fact that no one is around during the summer. Anything else? Also, in case anyone here is interested, I'd also maybe consider a barter arrangement to a nice young person with a car, who can help me out w/ errands and odds and ends over a few weekends. Just drop me a pm. Thanks.

I have an old accura legend with everything power i'd trade you for your intire set up, It's one ofthe 2 cars I'm selling but I'd much rather have a larger tank then pay taxes on my car another year Mike
gastone April 14, 2008 April 14, 2008 Get in touch with Dave Lin, he's the resident school fish tank guy around here. I'm sure one of the schools could accomodate something this size.

Just drop me a pm. Thanks. I have an almost dead silent 240-gallon system. You would certainly never hear it over a TV. The loudest thing in it is the motor on the kalk reactor. PM me if you'd like some hints and tips on making quiet... I didn't plan it for quietness - it just turned out that way. By comparison, my 58-gallon system sounds like a washing machine! Hint #1 - Eheim 1260 series pumps. bob
davelin315 April 14, 2008 April 14, 2008 I would be wary of turning off your pump to the skimmer and sump while watching TV. Your skimmer and sump helps the gas exchange in your system and the skimmer, by virtue of introducing so much air into your system, help to maintain a stable pH, at least to a small extent. If you cut the pumps and skimmer, you're likely to at some point in time cause damage to your tank. It may not be immediate, but even routine but gradual changes will take a toll on your system in the manner you are describing. Also, if you are considering donating a tank, let me know. I do put many of them in schools and maintain several reefs in my school. While difficult, they can be very rewarding, they just take some ingenuity and dedication.
Guest iwantaneel April 15, 2008 April 15, 2008 OP here. Thanks to those who responded both here and via PMs. I heard the "public schools don't take reef tanks" as well as the "get the clickable outlet" idea from my LFS -- it's a reputable one, and the advice came from an experienced hand there. Oh well! Anyway, at most, we are turning pump and skimmer off for 1 hour or two, once every 3 - 4 days. It's not an every day thing, and it's not for hours and hours at a time. Agree it's not ideal but it's keeping the peace. DaveLin, I'll touch base w/ you if I decide to go the donate-to-a-school route. I just had a really good tank day yesterday (spent a few hours doing this and that and it's looking really cool) so I'm going to enjoy it a bit more unless the right buyer comes along.
Origami April 16, 2008 April 16, 2008 iwantaneel, I've been to Bob's (lanman's) place and his 240 is as quiet as he's saying. Frankly, I was amazed when I saw it a few months ago. I'm sure that he'd be happy to show you his setup so you could get ideas on how to quiet your system down a bit.
