squiddly January 1, 2008 January 1, 2008 Despite a long fight with antibiotics, diamox, etc., I lost all my seahorses. I'm going to give up on the idea for awhile and turn the 40 back into a FOWLR. Hopefully I'll do better that way.
bprinehart January 1, 2008 January 1, 2008 Oh man Squiddly sorry to hear that. Hopefully this won't discourage you from trying again in the future. Hang in there. -Brian
squiddly January 2, 2008 Author January 2, 2008 Oh man Squiddly sorry to hear that. Hopefully this won't discourage you from trying again in the future. Hang in there. -Brian Thanks to everyone who sent notes. Not sure if I'm going to do seahorses anymore. It was really sad losing them, especially after the struggle with the meds and all that. I'll never say never, but it was pretty painful.
txaggies07 January 2, 2008 January 2, 2008 That is too bad. Don't get too discouraged. Good luck on the FOWLR.
gsedlack January 2, 2008 January 2, 2008 Sorry to hear of your loss. Sometimes you need to take a step back before you leap forward. Good luck.
squiddly January 2, 2008 Author January 2, 2008 Was this with the gas embellisms? One had the gas issue, that looked to be clearing up really well. She suddenly died. Another seahorse who wasn't doing too well, and I had just started treating her with antibiotics. I kept hoping but she didn't survive either. Very sad.
toastiireefs January 2, 2008 January 2, 2008 oh gosh im sorry i know how that is! i just lost one of my dwarf seahorses the other day- but he was old- i know it hurts especially when you put all that time into them and they are so much fun! i hopw you go back into seahorses some day-- they really are magical!
jason the filter freak January 2, 2008 January 2, 2008 sorry to hear about your loss, what are your plans for your fish only?
dbartco January 2, 2008 January 2, 2008 Should be getting a few tomorrow, and am going to try to raise some for the fun of it. Save some room....
tonkadawg January 3, 2008 January 3, 2008 sorry to hear about your loss Any idea on what the cause was and what - if anything, you could/would have done to prevent it? I've had a pair of H Reidi for just about 2 yrs to the date and would really hate to lose them. I got them at MS and was assured they were CB and verified that they did in fact eat frozen mysis. My male actually had a brood this morning!
squiddly January 3, 2008 Author January 3, 2008 sorry to hear about your loss, what are your plans for your fish only? I was going to do some jawfish, a dwarf angel, 6 line wrasse (to eat my happy bristle worm infestation :-)), and maybe a few pretty gobis that are too small for the 180. I'm still pretty sad Should be getting a few tomorrow, and am going to try to raise some for the fun of it. Save some room.... Good luck! Let me know how you do? I had kudas. I'm thinking that perhaps erectus might be a bit easier?
dbartco January 3, 2008 January 3, 2008 Sorry- yes, they are erectus. He sent a pregnant male, but I don't think I am ready to handle this batch.

squiddly January 3, 2008 Author January 3, 2008 sorry to hear about your loss Any idea on what the cause was and what - if anything, you could/would have done to prevent it? I've had a pair of H Reidi for just about 2 yrs to the date and would really hate to lose them. I got them at MS and was assured they were CB and verified that they did in fact eat frozen mysis. My male actually had a brood this morning! Congrats on your brood. I have no idea what I could have done. I had a UV sterilizer in the tank, I had a protein skimmer, I kept things very clean, I kept the temperature at 73 to delay bacterial growth, I fed frozen mysis soaked in vitamins, but the only one showing any type of difficulty was one who had internal gas bubble disease, which seemed to be doing well on diamox and antibiotics. Then another in the tank died suddenly, and the other one was lethargic, so I took the one remaining and decided to do prophylactic antibiotic dosing on her as well just to be sure she'd be ok. She was dead within 3 days. Then after 9 days of the 10 day treatment, the one with gas bubble disease suddenly died. She had been doing really well before then. I was doing 50% water changes with every dose, making sure the salinity was equal, kept the water temperatures equal, continued feeding throughout, etc. I just have no idea at all.
