mogurnda October 29, 2007 October 29, 2007 I spent the past week with fish and corals on the real reef. Unfortunately we had a storm, power went out, and the GFCI tripped when it came back on. Jerry came to the rescue and got it running, but it was too late for some of the fish. Lost all the fish in the 90 except my two clowns. The corals and inverts look great. I loved my kole tang and foxface, and will miss them, but it is also an opportunity to try something new. What would be your favorite grazing fish for a 90 gallon mixed reef? Blenny? Tang? rabbitfish? For your entertainment, some photos from last week:
HowardofNOVA October 29, 2007 October 29, 2007 Whoa, Dave, Sorry for your lost! Seems been a tough year for all!! All I can say is that hair algae outbreak I had last year was completely wiped out in one week but 2 FAT Tangs, One Yellow and one Powder Blue! Beautiful too!
zotzer October 29, 2007 October 29, 2007 Awww, Dave....sorry to hear what happened. Can't go wrong with a big fat blenny! They are the tank clown, and so much fun to watch! Glad your clowns made it...they are some nice big fat and happy ones and would be ultra hard to replace!!! Tracy
jamal October 29, 2007 October 29, 2007 it looks like sponge. i love how the pbt looks but they are so sensitive and ich prone. sorry about the tank this has not been a good year for many
mogurnda October 29, 2007 Author October 29, 2007 what's all the yellow encrusting in this pic? It's called an elephant ear sponge. They are huge, and are really that color. Good suggestions so far. Keep em' coming.
jamesbuf October 29, 2007 October 29, 2007 Convict Tang is a good grazer. I agree with the blenny addition. Many different kinds to choose from. Red spot is my favorite.
squiddly October 29, 2007 October 29, 2007 Very sorry for your losses. I think I may have lost my Potters Angel since I haven't seen him since we got back. Vacations can be such a problem :(. Great shots, though. Both difficult to get (Rock Beauties are notoriously skittish, and getting an eel when being cleaned is really cool). What equipment do you use?
mogurnda October 29, 2007 Author October 29, 2007 I'll save all of you the other 400 photos that didn't come out as well The setup is a Canon G3 in an Ikelite housing. I just got an Ikelite SR-51 substrobe, and discovered the housing won't allow TTL metering (the camera and strobe will), so the strobe was on manual for the whole trip. Once I get a chance to look through things, I may post a few more in a new thread.
mogurnda October 29, 2007 Author October 29, 2007 I like the idea of a blenny (to be named later), convict tang and doliatus rabbitfish. Wonder if they will all fit in the tank, though.
zotzer October 29, 2007 October 29, 2007 I like the idea of a blenny (to be named later), I vote for this one. Well, not this *exact* one...he is taken! LOL Tracy
davelin315 October 30, 2007 October 30, 2007 I really enjoy the orange shoulder tang (still juvenile coloration) that's at school as well as looking forward to seeing my two Dussumieri tangs swim. Awesome looking fish!
jamesbuf October 30, 2007 October 30, 2007 I vote for this one. Well, not this *exact* one...he is taken! LOL Tracy Red spot blenny. I loved mine before it went carpet surfing. Had the personality of a midas blenny, hiding in rockwork and popping his head out and such, but it nipped on the rock and glass like an algae blenny. Making me want another one.
Ne0eN October 30, 2007 October 30, 2007 Blennies are cool. I just got a Lawnmower Blenny and he's the funniest thing to watch. Hopefully he'll get started taking care of my hair algae infestation. So far he's still adjusting to the new digs. Great pics! Keep them coming... --Rob

James, Mine went carpet surfing the very first night I had him. In the morning, I caught the dog sniffing at something, and it was my new blenny. I went to pick him up, and he was *alive*. He miraculously survived the ordeal and hasn't done it since, thank heavens. It was quite a while before he'd even approach the top of the tank. Behaviorally, they are very much a cross between the midas and the lawnmower. Better swimmers than lawnmowers but also very good algae munchers! Mine is quite the ham. I swear he poses for the camera when I try to get tank pictures. LOL When it's feeding time, or he's ultra-determined about something, this darker line across his eyes appears and he looks like the masked avenger. Tracy
steveoutlaw October 30, 2007 October 30, 2007 Go with something unique. I had a gold spotted rabbitfish in my 210g. It was one of the most intriguing fish I've ever owned.
jason the filter freak October 30, 2007 October 30, 2007 I love my bi color blenny he's always out front in the tank hopping about the rocks and what not
