Can someone tell me what kind of clown I have? a) it was part of a break-down, take all my fish deal, and the owner just said it was a clown. b) it just bit me...

Glad he's small... couldn't get his teeth into me.

true percula I think, but I'm not as good at the clown game as others.... I've never had a vicious clown, I want one...

He's always been a perfect gentleman... until tonight - after I'd fed the fish, I was spot-feeding my blasto's, and he just came right over and bit my finger. Then he continued to threaten my hand until I was done.

It may not be a gentleman, maybe it's a female defending it's territory. Female clownfish can get very aggressive, some moreso than others, especially when an egg clutch is in the area. My female Tomato Clownfish has bitten my hand a few times, talk about "biting the hand that feeds you".

mine has only accidently nipped at my fingers meaning to nip at food

I agree, looks like a true perc. true percs are more agressive than the false ones. mine just recently started attacking my hand anytime it's in the tank. might be something that comes with age.

Jason,

I should have taken video of my sweet, calm, darling female percula when I introduced the new one. It looked like something out of Wild Kingdom!!

Bob,

Looks like a true perc, with the dark black bands.

Looks like an ocellaris to me. It's hard to tell, though, because of the size and fuzziness of the picture. I would think that a true percula would have started to show some more of the black forming between the first and second stripe, but again, it's hard to tell. If it's uniform in its black striping and it's older than a juvenile I'd say ocellaris. If it's very immature, then I'd say I'm not sure. The coloration might also help you out as the true percula is darker orange typically, but again, it's hard to tell with picture quality.

Talk to Byron at BRK. I watched a clown take a chunk out of his hand there this past weekend.

I've had False Perc's for a while. For a few years, they were calm, docile, and never came near my hand when I had it in the water. Once the pair started laying eggs, everything changed, and the female has become very aggressive, even trying to jump out of the water to nip at me.

Good news is, looks like your Perc's will be supplying a nice diet of sushi eggs for the other tankmates every few weeks!!

I don't know how long the gentleman had it in his tank before I got it. She is a very dark orange, almost red. She has grown quite a bit in the last month. She is hard to photograph, she never stops moving! That was the best out of 20 pictures!

She didn't' bite me tonight - but she did come toward my hand when I was feeding the blasto's and acans, though! I had to chase her away with the turkey baster a couple of times.

bob

Maybe she's associating your hand with food. I feed my clowns by hand (hah, and now the dottyback!), so they associate my hand with food, but they do know the difference between the food and the human flesh.

Bob - I have a brighter orange, and more docile true perc if you'd like to trade. Yours has some black in it and it will better match the one that I have.

Let's see how it goes - I got one of those LONG turkey-basters today. So I only really need to worry about it when I'm moving corals around, etc... We shall see.

Well, I darned near killed my female clown tonight! I put some glue on a frag to stick in the tank, a blob of glue broke loose in the water, and she went after it like it was food. It was all I could do to keep her away, and I would have hated myself if she'd glued her mouth shut!!!

Goofy clownfish!

I glued my fire shrimp's claws together... but he was fine after the next molt.

I quit using superglue in the tank - I glue outside the tank, and use two-part epoxy inside.

My Maroon Clown bites the H-E-double hocky sticks out of me everytime I scrape the tank. She defends her anemone with great vigor.
