Rascal October 1, 2007 October 1, 2007 (edited) A little while back I picked up a couple of rock / flower anemones (Epicystis crucifer, says Google). I really liked them in the Caribbean, they are relatively cheap, easy to care for, and best of all - mine have stayed exactly where I put them. They just burrowed into the sand next to a rock and opened right up. Pretty cool. They are also REALLY sticky and close up fast. A few inches upstream of the two little anemones was, among other things, a beautiful little (quarter sized) single-polyp hot pink ricordia yuma. Tonight I noticed that the ric had become dislodged from its little rubble pile, so I righted it and set it aside while I rearranged the rubble a little bit. When I went to put it back on its new and improved perch -- I saw it sitting smack dab in the middle of one of those anemones! I could barely believe my eyes, but it looked like the anemone was starting to close up around it, rock and all. Without thinking, I reached in to try and pluck the wee ric out of danger. That little anemone closed up and retracted so fast it actually started to suck me in with it. I was able to escape with my fingers (though I can still feel a tingle), but the ric was not so lucky. It was gone without a trace. After about an hour, the anemone started to open back up. I was sure it would regurgitate the little piece of rubble with the now dead ricordia on it -- but no such luck. It has been seven hours now and there has been no sign of the ric or its rock. I really think the anemone ate it! I figured it was a fish killer if anyone was dumb enough to swim near it, but I never dreamed it would eat a coral. It cost almost as much to feed that anemone tonight as it did my family. :( Edited October 1, 2007 by Rascal
zotzer October 1, 2007 October 1, 2007 Oh my gosh, what a bummer! I had to reach in and rescue my brand new orange turban snail from the LTA this weekend. And I worry about Spot, the blenny, as he is getting awfully comfortable and getting too close for comfort. I wish the clowns would host in there and keep my other critters away. LOL Sorry to hear about your yuma...that's rotten!! T
jamal October 1, 2007 October 1, 2007 i was relly looking forward to getting an anemone but decided against it for this reason among others. they just seem alot less dangerous in a species tank though i really meant to get a bta. sorry for your loss man.
jason the filter freak October 1, 2007 October 1, 2007 Wow those rics are awesome looking, and pretty expensive. Sorry to hear about that.
yauger October 1, 2007 October 1, 2007 bummer sorry to hear, I would be splitting that BTA in a hurry just to get some revenge and to make up some of the cost to buy another pink ric...
Rascal October 2, 2007 Author October 2, 2007 Update: It lives!! After 24 hours in the belly of the beast, the little ric popped out some time today. There are only a few bits of color left on it and it looks pretty battered, but it is still attached to the rock, it's mouth is in good shape, and it is starting to open up a little bit more -- so it's definitely alive. Pretty wild.
Guest NSC October 2, 2007 October 2, 2007 NICE!! I guess LR isn't as palatable as an anenome might think! Hope the ric makes it! My BTA is the primary suspect on two missing persons...a false perc(go figure??? ) and a chromis(not surprised). Glad to see a softie is resilient enough to grind through the perils of an anenome!

lanman October 2, 2007 October 2, 2007 Get OUT!!! Wow, the wonders of mother nature! Tracy Now Tracy - you go find us each a nice hot pink ricordia fiji somewhere. I'll trade you a nice neon green one for your efforts, and pay for the ric as well! Actually - I heard that Scales gets them in sometimes. I've never been there. bob

No offense, my dear dear Bob, but if I find one, I am keeping it ALL for myself! Now, if it has babies, you might just maybe get one (after I keep two or three more for back-up!). LOL T
