I have just obtained these corals and are now in my tank....

http://www.thewebcastle.com/_corals/

other than the brains spewing out some yukky mucus from time to time everyone seems to be settled in....... but since putting the corals in the tank my forearm has been stinging.... not my hand.... not the topside of my forearm.... just the bottom portion...... now I have NOT touched any of the corals, just the rock it came on.... but *everytime* I stick my arm in the tank now the forearm stings..... stings for about 15 mins....... and there are little red bumps....

is the mucus that is spewed out of the brains stinging me somehow?? if so, they are SO outta there...... :bluefish:

I too seem to be having alergic reactions to my tank lately, but there are very few corals in there. I "feel your pain"

Got the same thing on my end. I am way high on calcium/Alk and I think its the freaking cold weather. I used some aveeno afterwards and it made it better. Now i keep doing that and its working pretty well

My knuckles feel like they're on fire because of them being dry (darn cold weather) and sticking them into salt water. I too started to use moisturizer at night and they don't hurt that much either.

But some people do have protein allergies. Tell tale sign would be the appearance of hives.

I have the same thing every time I reach my arm in the tank ... gets all dried out, red rashes all over the place, hurts like crazy

In the last couple of months have you pissed off your wife or girlfriend? Women can be very passive aggresive.

well, its good to know it isn't anything *IN* the tank making my arm all red n everything......

It would always help to do a water change. "Dilution is the solution to pollution." Or in this case, I suggest that one or more of your corals were stressed and released something defensive into the water.

Since the other corals are still sitting in it, I'd remove some with a water change.

That's my first guess. Otherwise something you've just added is causing a stronger reaction than you've had before. Both scenarios have happened to me.

As far as any creme or moisturisor, be certain that you don't stick your hands in the tank after applying these. Not good any reef inhabitants.

I DEFFINATELY AGREE!!

I've only had that happen once. I was arranging the rockwork in a nano I was setting up a few years ago and apparently pissed of a hitch hiking filter feeding cuke. He must have released some toxins. I ended up with a wicked rash on both forearms and hands, and had to go to the doc for some steroid cream. Un-fun for sure - it itched like crazy. Needless to say, once I found the cuke a few days later, he was removed from the tank.

When you get the rash, try putting vinegar on the affected area immediately to see if it reduces how long the pain lasts and how much the rash spreads. If it does, then the problem is in your tank. Vinegar neutralizes unfired stinging nematocysts which may be in free suspension in the water column. When you get these nematocysts on you, it is common for only a fraction (20-25%) of them to fire right away. By neutralizing the remaining 75-80% of them you reduce the total amount of pain you will experience and the amount of rash you will develop.

Hmmm... this thread makes me wonder. I have never had sensitive skin to the water but recently my thumb has had nothing but problems with tank water. It's always cracked and dried out unless I keep my hand out of the tank for an extended period of time (I'm talking a couple of weeks or more). Anyway, I wonder if there are undesirables in the tanks that are doing this. Some protozoans come to mind that could have this affect. Anyone know how to test for these guys other than simply looking through a microscope? That may be the problem as well.

I've been doing some drywall work over the past couple of weeks and of course, my hands and forearms are very dry as a result. I reached into my tank a couple of days ago to move a coral and immediately felt a strong burning sensation. The same thing happens sometimes if my skin is chapped from cold weather.

Are you dosing any chemicals into your tank? perhaps you are allergic to Stronsium, Magnesium or high ALK levels, maybe CA in concentrated amount. You may want to check that too.
