  1. Wow. Two reports of asexual reproduction in sharks within a few months.. Odd how the timing works sometimes.
  2. Kinda like your response. Long on AGW rhetoric with no hard data to support your allegations. Here is another new paper that explores the link between the 22 year 'double sunspot cycle' to hydrological features in South Africa. THe paper claims to find a solar cycle/climate correlation to 95%. Definately an interesting read. http://nzclimatescience.net/images/PDFs/alexander2707.pdf
  3. I don't sit there and huff it. Just a quick sniff, its probably better for you than the polluted DC air we all breathe every day anyway.
  4. Yes the sales/trade area is in the members section. Please be patient and bear with us on getting your membership status updated. The process requires manual resetting of access privleges and I don't have access to the payment information (only the Dhoch (treasurer) and HowardofNOVA (membership director) have that information). I'll check with them and get your status updated shortly. Welcome to WAMAS! BB
  5. My unofficial test is the sniff test. After gluing, when you can't smell the solvent anymore then it is cured enough to use.
  6. These are probably the same 'chineese bulbs' that several members tried a while back. I think the biggest issues with the bulbs was low PAR and poor manufacturing (lots of defective bulbs). Howard would be the best person to ask about the bulbs. BB
  7. I'm guessing you were on the sidewalk when you took that picture.
  8. We're practically neighbors. Let me know what day you pick and I'll try to get my tank cleaned up a bit and we can do a twofer. BB
  9. Wow.. The awesome unpredictible power of nature is truely a spectacle to behold.
  10. Just remember, give Mr. Murphy a shout out with a set of fake dates that you will be out of town. That way when he shows up to do that thing that he does, you will be there to catch him! For some reason he seems to like to visit my tank when I'm away. Just ask Howard.
  11. Well I can't take credit for this, I copied the one John at BRK uses. Take a piece of acrylic. Get a large diameter PVC pipe (I used a 6" union fitting). Glue the acrylic to one side of the pipe. Let dry. Make sure that this seal is water tight. Then to take pictures place the acrylic side into the water. Just enough so that it is below the surface. That way you can photograph from the top down, without interference from the surface of the water. Basically you are making goggles for your camera!
  12. I ought to delete the green teardrop... Byron wouldn't sell it to me this past weekend. That is probably the nicest clam I have ever seen.
  13. Ok, ya'll asked for it. Let me see your clams! (I'll post mine tonight after I shoot some pics.)
  14. There are a couple of options. 1. Cut a hole in the 2nd floor ceiling. Observe orientation of supports. 2. Look in the basement. Many basements have at least a part that is unfinished where you can see how/where the supports run. 3. Use a stud finder on the 2nd floor ceiling. (not as much fun as cutting a hole in the ceiling but it should work.) 4. If your townhouse is as crappily built as mine, look carefully at the ceiling and you will be able to see where they did a crappy job covering the screws/nails holding the sheet rock to the ceiling. Follow the lines and you will see where the beams run. (however, I caution you it still isn't as fun as cutting a hole in the ceiling!)
  15. Just another example of why I support the good LFS's in the area. If we don't support them, they won't be there when we need them in an emergency. Thank you to all the good LFS that support WAMAS (you know who ya'll are, if you have questions PM me and I'll tell you which ones I like).
  16. One trick I use, even with experienced help, is to portion out the food for every feeding when I am gone. That way you still have control over how much food is going into your tank, and it makes the job of your helper that much easier.
  17. Shoot me a PM. I have tons of pods in my macro algae and can harvest some for you. Only caveat is, it will be at least a week and a half before I can do it (in the middle of finals right now).
  18. Byron + Beer = Very fine entertainment (or so I've heard).
  19. And Byron! What more could anyone want. Especially fun when the two are combined!
  20. Lets try to keep this on topic, that is marine aquarium related reviews of vendors. However, I too have to agree that puppy-mill dogs should be avoided. For those who are not familiar with the term 'puppy mill' here is the wikipedia entry on the subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puppy_mill If you want to continue the discussion of puppy mills, please take advantage of the off topic forum (Refugium). Thanks, BB
  21. If you are on a GFI, then as soon as you add the grounding probe you will have to find the stray current. Reason being, it will trip the GFI. GFI measures current in vs. current out, by providing an alternate path to ground (current out) you will get an imbalance which will trip the GFI. However, a grounding probe tripping the GFI is a much better way to find it than the alternative...(i.e. you making the path to ground).
  22. I have been interested in buying a macro lens for photographing my tank. In my search I came across this link, where an ingenious chap built a macro lens out of a Pringles can. http://www.photocritic.org/2005/macro-phot...hy-on-a-budget/ Thoughts? Would this work? I think for the cost it is at least worth giving it a try.
  23. Ahh, I see that you have discovered the little secret of the CPR aquafuges... Namely that their fittings aren't standard! I honestly don't understand why they do this. I had one of the old ones (back when they used RIO pumps) and I tried to modify it (unsuccessful). If I remember correctly (and I might not) the piping goes through the 'fuge via some type of bulkhead fitting. My recommendation would be to remove the stock piping, measure the hole and replumb it with standard plumbing fittings. You might have to enlarge the hole some with a dremmel in order to fit standard piping. One suggestion for the bulkhead fitting would be to consider using uniseal fittings. I'll take a look at mine when I get home tonight and see if I can come up with more ideas for you. BB
  24. I understand the concerns with farm raised salmon. I too think they need to be addressed, however from what I have seen the effort appears directed at eliminating not fixing the salmon farms.
