  1. sorry guys, i stand corrected. i'd read less than stellar reviews of the NOVA fixtures on RC, and was just sharing that info. wasn't trying to start anything. if i'm wrong, i'm wrong! can't win em all.
  2. that t5 fixture isn't really what people are referring to with T5's being ok with sps clams. that's basically a glorified PC light, as the bulbs do not have individual reflectors. the nova has one big reflector, like a pc light. i'd say you *might* be ok with some easy sps. but this isn't comprable to MH or T5s where each bulb has it's own reflector.
  3. did you drip acclimate? that's awesome, i get down there a lot, i'll have to check it out!!!
  4. ditto. dimitri treats his regulars quite well, i've found. he's a great guy. while i still disagree with some of the coral they've been bringing in, (chilli, carnation, goniopora, elegance) i've gotten some nice pieces from them and it's great for stopping by for food or little equipment.
  5. tim, good point. i'm not saying that you won't get a nice sohal, but each fish is an individual lucky mandarin eating mysis. nice work!
  6. i would say, first off, drop the idea of the sohal. they are MEAN, and they get huge. i don't really think that a 180 is big enough for them long term. they have no problems viciously killing any other fish that irritates them. i've seen videos of them slicing open huge fish like it was nothing. i might worry about the bartletts and the mandarin with the trigger in there too, especially once it gets bigger. blue throats won't eat coral, but small fish might be too much to resist. also, wait a few months after the fuge is up and running to add the mandarin.
  7. I recently led a group buy for NY Aquatics. Michael was very accomodating, great communication, and excellent response to problems. Transaction was easy, and he is very helpful over email, and responds promptly to inquires. My one issue is this... I ordered 4 female lyretail anthias from him, and he sent me 4 females that have already begun to change to males, turned pink, spots on the fins, and 2 had the elongated dorsal spine.... I don't know what to say about that, honestly. I feel, if you're selling anthias, and you can't distinguish this process, that's a huge issue. I won't speculate on the cause of this error. I know others who have gotten anthias groupings from him without issue, so maybe this is an isolated incident. Given the positive feedback he has garnered from WAMAS thus far, I would speculate that this is, in fact, the case. He did refund me for the one extra definite male I was sure about on delivery, which was great. I'm not going to ask for a refund for the other 3, as a) i feel silly for asking for a total refund on 4 healthy fish, and b) as two are very early in the change, and hopefully will stop, so I may end up with a workable, if unusual, group. However, there is a lot of mouth locking going on, so I don't know how things will settle out in the end. Needless to say, the other fish that came in were gorgeous and healthy, except for the one DOA (which he promptly took care of), and indeed, my anthias are beautiful, acclimated well, and are very healthy, and ate immediately after introduction. I would highly, highly, recommend him for all livestock except for anthias. Excellent service, top notch. Michael, thank you again, I hope it works out with my fish, I'll keep you updated! Charlie
  8. i'm 100% that sean doesn't stock them. i was trying to get bulbs from him last week.
  9. i started all of this with my micro i think. LOL. chris just couldn't not have something that cool. hehehe. mine's better! oo i got the purple/teal acan from F&F last night! woo i'll get pics up later today.
  10. interceptor 23.0 mg pill i got today. thanks copps! this will kill my cleaner shrimp won't it? any issues with re-introducing the bugs if i remove them to a separate tank temporarily?
  11. haha thanks chris! i will try and get some and treat today, but i'm acclimating anthias right now!
  12. john, thanks for the tips... what is the recommended dosage for the interceptor treatment?
  13. i have red bugs on my loripes. what would the recommended treatment be? i know interceptor can kill all of your crustaceans... but i'm worried if i dip, i'll miss some. any suggestions? i have tech d solution, should i dip? i've also read dragon face pipe fish eat them? help! FWIW, this was a colony i got from reeling reefer, so if you got stuff from him, you might want to inspect. none of my other acros are showing any signs. thank goodness. for the moment.
  14. do you supplement anything else? drip kalk?
  15. that is a hang on back refugium, not a sump, if you're talking about the AquaFuge. i think CPR makes sumps, too, but i'm not positive. i'd just grab a 55 gallon and some lexan at HD and DIY it!
  16. haha, i tried the kalk powder last night. i'll have to wait until i get home tonight to see how well it worked, as i get used to the smell pretty quickly once i'm upstairs.
  17. flex tubing and a plain neoprene mouse pad or two should do the trick. the flex is just as important. hard pvc picks up a lot of vibration.
  18. it's not a new tank that's cycling... i'll try that. thanks!
  19. ok, with my newly installed 90, that's doing well... almost done (more rock and sand going in this weekend) i get the musty humid smell like you get in some of the lfs... any suggestions? it's not bad, but it is a little offputting at first. hard to describe. it doesn't smell like dying things or anything... just strong. i know a) running carbon will help, and b) i've heard putting a bag of carbon on top of the skimmer cup will help. any validity to those ideas? also, any other suggestions?
  20. they will all be able to handle the light, but a deresa is the hardiest overall. i'd start with that.
  21. i'd say your biggest risk is the pygmy angel, because it's established. often they will ignore something that is in the tank when they are introduced, but everything after is food. however, your pygmy is one of the better behaved, as well. just watch it, and be ready to take the clam out if necessary. watch the sally lightfoot as well... crustaceons have been known to hasten attach clams that aren't doing well... i know my cleaner shrimp started in on my squammy before i even knew it was having issues.
  22. i agree with you partially. obviously size, swim room, and territoriality ARE the first consideration. i wouldn't consider it ok to put 5 tangs in a 90, for instance, regardless of a skimmer. we're talking, really, about schooling fish here, specficially, and especially with anthias/chromis, overskimming helps keep your parameters stable.
  23. roo, i really would go submersible. you'd probably be fine, but if you aren't, that = 15-20 gallons of water on the floor, a burned up panworld, and possibly deaths in the main tank. eheims are great, not hot, and quiet.
  24. yes, but are you running that YET? once you've got that up, yeah man, stock away, but it's not there, til it's there, if you know what i mean.
  25. i'd really advise against doing this, especially in your application. 20h you're taking a risk drilling no matter how you look at it. it's thin glass, and could fail over time, especially when dealing with the vibration coming from the external pump connection. you can use flex hose to diminish this, but it'll still play a factor. if you're going to hard pipe pvc it, i'd say definitely not. most stores won't drill tanks for customers, as the liability issues that follow if they shatter, say a 900.00 180 gallon are too much to deal with. there are many WAMAS members that have the right bits and should be willing to help you out! i wouldn't waste time contacting stores though. glass shops may or may not do it, it just depends on the shop. in any case, if it shatters while being drilled, it's not necessarily the person drilling's fault. 20's are just thin, and you never can tell. i'd consider carefully if this is your only option.
