Whats anyone's thoughts on a dwarf octopus?
Charlie97L replied to jason the filter freak's topic in General Discussion
to address this, if you put it in there, it would eat all your fish in short order, and/or ink from fright/harassment from another inhabitant, and wipe out your tank completely. jason, they just can't go in a reef tank, period, they need their own tank. btw, nanocubes with a rock... haha. i don't know if that was in jest. everything i've read about is that best solution for the lid is a rubber seal with acrylic wing nuts. -
anyone think a 6 inch overhang will be a problem?
Charlie97L replied to ReeferMan's topic in General Discussion
i like the length too, but you're not going to like it when you have 40g of water on the floor, and your main tank (i'm assuming you would run them inline) draining into the broken tank as well -

Charlie97L replied to ReeferMan's topic in General Discussion
gotcha. well. your overhang would be 12x6x12 which is 3.7 gallons x 8.5 lbs per gallon = 31.45 lbs of water not supported... i don't know man. 20L aren't super strong. can you just do a 24" tank instead? i think that would work better. are you going to be drilling it? that's a factor as well. if it is drilled, i'd say no. if it's not drilled... maybe. drilling will just increase the stress on the drilled pane, by not having the end supported, and you'd likely get some bowing, and eventually, failure. -

dude, 20L tanks are only 30" -
yeah, he has bimacs! too pricey for me. i'm way overskimming, though, too jason. my skimmer is rated for i think 130 heavily stocked, and normal stocking on a 200... so i can get away with a little more. not MUCH more, but a little, plus deltec underrates their skimmers even in that situation.

you don't think i could do 5-6?

that's cool man... we can agree to disagree the one time i went there i liked it, but i haven't shopped there enough to make an accurate appraisal.

phisigs... that's conjecture, and you shouldn't assume that he is talking about that store. plenty of people have had great experiences at marine scene, and there's no call to arbitrarily blame them for what could have happened anywhere. just my opinion. we as a club thrive on our LFS support, and dissing one of them without cause doesn't reflect positively on us as a club to ALL of the LFS's.

the perfecto megaflows work great. they have larger piping on the 1" bulkheads. they were designed properly, and are perfectly matched to what the overflow can handle. my 90 perfecto overflow/durse stuff works like a champ. quality design. the only mod i had to make was stuff a piece of filter sponge under the siphon break hole... once i did that the tank is virtually silent.

dude, remember what happened the last time you scaped? i like your tank. i think that honestly, you'll need more live rock to make something drastically different happen. i'd get that, get it curing, and think about it some more.

light suggestions for a 20g High softie zoa tank
Charlie97L replied to Charlie97L's topic in General Discussion
you think that'll be ok even with some of the brighter zoas? -
hey guys, i'm looking for a pretty moderate lighting setup fixture for a 20g high zoa, leather and gorgonian tank. what do ou think? i'm trying to not blow a lot of cash on this. any suggestions? i have some fancy zoas, not all of them are, but some are, so i want to make sure that i have enough light for them. thanks! any input is welcomed!

to paraphrase crocidile dundee: that's not a frag... now THAT's a frag.

sounds like you have it under control!! watch any shrimp or inverts when you change over your tank. that usually involves a lot of stress. i would advise against a coral banded. they are great in reef tanks with larger fish, but smaller fish are too much of a temptation for them. i like fire shrimp and cleaners. what size is your tank? if you have ~55g or higher, you could get 2 cleaners. i wouldn't do mix species (ie. 1 cleaner and 1 fire) in anything less than a 125. you can, but they may both hide a lot if you do. research, as a lot of shrimp aren't totally reef safe. there's one called the camel, that many LFS's sometimes accidentally sell as peppermints, or just label reef safe, when they are not.

Geo style Kalk reactor done, 14" of tube left - what to do?
Charlie97L replied to ErikS's topic in General Discussion
make me a kalk reactor!! any pics of your creation? -
yes, but technically they are reef safe ie. they won't eat coral or shrimp. it all depends on what your definition of reef safe is. many urchins are reef safe, if you don't like corraline algae.

i have that same tank. those are glue slip fittings. the screw threads are for the bulkhead nut only, not to attach a fitting. 1" pvc will glue right in. hope that helps! i wouldn't do a ball valve on the drain, just MO. the less restriction there, the better. for plumbing ease, visit john at BRK, he's got loads of plumbing stuff in stock. take your pump, and your drain/return kit if you can to verify fittings. he helped me out when i decided i wanted to do everything with flex.

he's just showing off!!

wow chris, looks amazing. i'm sorry i wasn't able to get out to help you dang job. stupid stupid job. oh man, those zoas you gave me finally came back!!! they are PURTY.

well i got this from reeling reefer, and he's had this in his tank for over a year, with a load of other monti's... i think he'd have seen some damage by now. someone on RC suggested vermetid snails. it looks like a mucous featherduster, almost. i'm almost positive it's not nudis. i know what those look like, and these are WAY too big, and not the right shape. edit: they've been positively IDed as vermetids. solution... cover the holes with a bit of epoxy for 2-3 days, then remove. no more snail. THANKS GUYS!!
