  1. I have had good luck with pepermint shrimp, but the real aptasia killer is my copperband. I actually put aptasia into my tank for it to eat.
  2. I use both a sump and refugium with macro algea in both. I use the HOB to feed the fish copeopods that aren't ground up by the return pump and as back up circulation if the main pump and powerheads shut off. They are on different breakers. A canister filter is sealed and can't be added to, a sump is a handy place to put all sorts of equipment-heaters, skimmers, kalk reactors, extra liverock/sand.....
  3. some are younger than that, about 6mnths. The staghorn grows too much, as well as the plate corals. The reef isn't ugly, at least I don't think so, just the physical setup. I hadn't thought about the 10x (more or less) growth of my 18m corals.
  4. My temp. set up while my wife and I buy a house. Works well, looks bad. about 6months of growth from small frags. Happy fish, they don't care about looks. The tang is about 4yrs, copperband around 3yrs. checkout the sump action 1:1 ratio.
  5. If that job doesn't work out I know a dept. that is hiring. Free gun.

    Copepods

I live in alexandia and you can have a bunch of 'pods with macro algea to start your refugium. My sump and refugium are teeming with the little critters. You'll wind up with a few micro stars as well.
  7. Get a model rocket ignitor system and hook it up to a small firecracker and cover in wax. Put the mine in the area the fish sleeps in and bait the area with food. Wait until the fish goes near and set off the mine, stunning the fish. Yep I had a demented childhood followed by six years active duty in the US Marine corps infantry and almost seven years as an inner-city police officer.
  8. Small water proof firecracker with a lead weight at feeding time. Much like a depth charge, stun the fish and scoop it out. (look out for the glass ) Maybe a mini spear gun?
  9. It seems to like lower light as well, I don't get much growth under direct MH, but the shady spots grow purple. Never heard of that guy, glad it was mentioned.
  10. I met the new owner and staff of Wally's today, I think we are going to see a very positive change in one of the areas long standing LFS. The owner is a fish keeper, that in of its self will help out.
  11. Man, all you have to do is get some Joe's juice and squirt in into the anemome and its a goner. No need to take the rock out or anything like that. In fact I'm about to go a wack some in my tank. Its just regular maintance.
  12. I read that yellow tangs need to be in odd numbered groups of 5+. I would skip the anthias for now, until the tank is settled and you are sure you are willing to invest the time and money in keeping them. One thing about finicky fish is the exessive feeding needed to aclimate them, which inturn means multiple water changes, either in a QT tank or the main tank.
  13. Yup, majanos. Kill them now, nothing eats them. Joe's juice is the only thing that has worked for me.
  14. I would wait on the anthias, they are difficult to keep-take forever to change over to frozen food let along flake. I wouldn't put any damsels in the tank-they turn into big mean ugly fish. Triggers, from my expierince, eat lots and pollut the water. Oh, and you have a mix of aggressive and passive fish, cardinals with triggers. Might not make it. Copperband? gotta have a copperband for pest control, after its kept in a small tank until it eats something. Where did you get a 650g tank?
  15. My copperband is always on the hunt for an aptasia, my refugium and sump are infested with the pests but none to be seen in the main tank. I found Joe's juice the best cure for aptasia and the other pest that I can't think of the name of.
  16. I have found cheato to be a great addition to a tank, or sump/refugium. I have a 55g that with a lot of fish in it, sps that grow like weeds and other corals. The sump is also 55g and I have a HOB refugium as well. The 55g is about 3//4 full of cheato and sea grass as well the refugium. I also use an oversized skimmer. Basically though, the macro algea absorbs nutrients and grows pods which in turn feed the fish, to some degree. The more cheato and macro algea the better.
  17. I saw some of these fish for sale for $15.00 each, I said WOW and got three, all dead with in two days. Could have purchased one captive bred and still had it in my tank.
  18. Yes, it was the most stunning fish I have ever seen. I would suffer gunshot wounds about my head and body if I purchased it for my home aquarium. Just talking about the fish with my wife caused her stress.
  19. With a rare $400.00 jawfish and some other expensive fish. (not for sale though) The best is Blue Ribbon koi's $1900.00 angle minow:)
  20. Thanks, I didn't know my membership was in need of renew, just kinda guessed. Thanks again.
  21. I am missing the club member parts of the forum, I renewed my membership and everything.
  22. Petland on Columbia Pike is redoing their saltwater section and its looking good. Nice fish care and natural looking displays. Good selection of dry goods as well, food ect.
  23. CPR skimmers=junk, but the refugiums are good. I have one that I got used and its working out for me. I have a aquaC skimmer and it really skims, but is super sensitive to water level and chemistery (?) I would drill, overflows take up lots of space. I used an old skilter for a refugium for a long time, it worked great in that capacity.
  24. I let the salt water mix with a mag 5 at least over night, or longer. The only problem is the heat transfer from the mag 5, they really put off heat.
