  1. I can definatley say the Red Fromia Star won't do much for the sand bed, but they are otherwise a grat addition. Mine just likes to hang out on the rock. Otherwise I'd be interested in what works for you. Personally I've gone bare bottom :68: (hold back those dirty thoughts) and have no plans on going back.
  2. I use a 300 gal/hour pump on my smaller tank, which is a 30 gal long with a 10 gal sump. I think a 500 with an adjustment valve in line would work, but overall it depends on the size of your return line and how well it keep that sump full while the pump is going..
  3. I received one of these little bueaties with my 90 gal tank. I've seen it stalking snails and even attack a few. So far I haven't seen any coral damage, but it is slowly outstaying its welcome.
  4. Anton Count me in. I helped move a 180 in less than a day, but it didn't have the coral and rock work yours does. May want to set-up a 100 gal stock tank a day or two a head of time and move your corals in there for a bit. This will give the main tank time to settle for a day or two after the move. A Key item would be a mag 18 or larger pump to move all that water to trash cans in the back of pick-up trucks, and then back into the tank once set-up. Works wonders for your back.
  5. I've seen a few ways of securing power heads. The first being gluing it to a piece of acrylic and then attach the acrylis to the upper black rim of the tank. I've recently converted an old magnet algae scrapper into a movable powerhead fixture. Just glued the powerhead to the magnet and positioned it where I needed on the side glass of the tank.
  6. I personally use Lemon juice for both the majano and apstasia, but have recently used calcium chloride solution with super results. First off the CaCl solution was my first attempt at adding Ca to the tank, but when I found Kalk I switched over. The CaCl solution I have is made by Kent I think. But anyhow I've found with this I don't even have to inject the apstasia just get them in the stream coming out of the needle and they shrink up and turn to mush in seconds. While Lemon juice and kalk have taken either multiple shots or a day or so for them to wither and die. You can find the stuff online, I got mine from that fish place.
  7. What shape is the tank in? Any scratches etc? If not put me down for the tank and stand. I love my 90, but would prefer the extra floor space (24x48 vs the 18x48).
  8. Actually that is what the tank looked like at it's previous owners place. He was using an udergravel filter that just polluted the crushed coral substrate. So when I moved it to my place I chucked the substrate, but ment to replace it with south down. Unfortunately the southern states was all out of southdown that day. I've got the sand now, but I'm still debating on whether I'm going to use it or not.
  9. Well it's finally safe to say I've cleaned the tank up a bit. here are some before and after shots Before: After: Scrubbing the tank and rocks 75 Astrea Snails 6 Emerald Crabs 1 Foxface
  10. Last night while fishing around in my 90 gal after lights out I caught this monster. He was rather thin but while pulling him out from under some rocks it just kept getting bigger. At one point he was stretched the full height of the tank (24"). The funny part is he isn't the biggest one in there. When I first tossed him on the deck, he was all stretched out the first water mark.
  11. Also if you are serious about the FOWLR and plan on getting rid of your corals, but me down for that Brain you picked up a few months ago.
  12. Not that you need more fish, but if you don't have a foxface I'd highly recommend it. The new tank that I just picked up had terrible green and red algae everywhere. I did an initial scrub and flipped a bunch of the heavier coated rocks over, but the foxface scrubbed the H-E-double hocky sticks out of the rest of the rock work. I'm currently algae free and even have to feed the clean up crew right now.
  13. I'm interested in the Purple tang, let me know if you want to split the group.
  14. Southern States or the Tractor Supply store carry them.
  15. Just an update. The new clean up crew is working wonders on this red algae. Both the emerald crabs and Astrea snails are eating it like no tomorrow, with a little direction of course. If the snails had it thier way they would be surfing the glass, but a few times a day I'm relocating ~20 each time to the really bad rocks. And so far the work release program is working. I'm going to start moving the rocks around to make sure they get both sides. I haven't started aquascaping as of yet, that will happen in a few weeks once my new stand and Sump are built. Until then it will be polishing off this algae.
  16. I was just wondering where I could pick up some extra hermit shells, so my hermits stop pirating my snails. I have found places on line offering them with larger orders of crabs, but I'm looking to house just the ones I have for now. any insite other than ordering more snails would be greatly appreciated. Paul;
  17. As far as the tank move goes, just get a few trash cans, a tarp and a good pump. The pump does wonders for moving a lot of water. Also received my Hello Lights order today and the new (aquarium grade) metal halides and actinics are great. I"m going to start getting the tank on a good light cycle now vs the 3hrs a day with those crappy algae bulbs.
  18. Hey Anton, I'm at 2 tanks for now but plan on consolidating them all into the 90 gal eventually. The 90 was just too good of a deal to pass up. As for the frags surprisingly they are growing like weeds under the PC's. I can't wait to get them under the MH of the 90 gal. That is when I get some decent bulbs, the guy was using industrial MH's along with shop light bulbs. No wonder the algae took over.
  19. Boy these Astrea snails really love this red/dark green algae. I only have 10 of them in there and they are really putting a dent in the remaining algaebut there aren't enough of them to really take care of it. Hopefully when I get in my cleaning crew they will erradicate this nasty stuff.
  20. Steve, use the rubber maid for now. If you wait a week or two someone may be giving one away or you can find a cheap one in the local paper. Otherwise I've repaired quite a few tanks in my day and it is rather easy, but care must be taken. I'm not sure of the glass prices in Va, but when I last repaired a 40 gal tank in Pa the bottom panel cost me ~10$ but that was 1/4"x18"x36".
  21. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good articles on the effects of Copper on the saltwater aquarium. The combination of working with copper (copper plating semiconductors) and hearing how bad it is to the aquairum have got me interested. I have even done a few searches but really haven't come up with a good article as of yet.
  22. Well you guys asked for it, just check out the muck in this thing. The first is the pic I took when I first saw the tank and the second is it all set-up at my place. I decided to remove all the substrate, due to the undergravel filter. I tried to stop by the Sothern states store for some south down (AKA Yard right Tropicla play sand) but they were all out. So I'm going with the bare bottom for now, until I can finish the new stand and sump. As for the rocks I wasn't able to scrub them that clan so I flipped a bunch of them over to try and kill off that algae. So far my parameters are still in spec. Here is the tank at it's old home. And here it is after a bit of scrubbing and with out the sand.
  23. Well we just got finished with the tank move and the work has only begun. The move went pretty well it only took about and hour and half to pack everything up and get it loaded in the trucks. The ride back got a little hairy when I lost half the water on route 29, boy were those people surprised. After getting back to my place it took about an hour just to scrape all that red and black algae off of the tank walls, power heads and such. For those I haven't already spoken to about the tank. I got one H-E-double hocky sticks of a price on this bad boy, but in return I have one large algae problem as well. The tank was not well maintained, best example of this would be the 4yr old MH bulbs, lack of any sizeable clean up crew, well enough said. So I've already placed my order for new bulbs and a cleanup crew order is in the works. I've already spent a decent amount of time brushing algae and picking off bubble algae from the rockwork. And of course with all neglected tanks there is the aptasia. I've already gone through the first round of juicing them. Otherwise there are 2 nice size carpet anemones and lots more room to add corals once everything else is taken care of.
  24. Well after seeing everyone larger tanks and helping move a few, I decided to take the plunge and pick up a 90gal Saltwater Set-up. The tank is located just north of Leesburg in Lucketts off of 15 and will be going to Culpeper. The day has yet to be decided, but would like to shoot for this friday after 2pm or Sat. This will depend on when the volenteers are available. So if anyone is available for either of these days just let me know. Thanks Paul
