  1. I wanted to see what everyone thought about this new app. I have an iphone and have grown tired of it, I want a bigger better smart phone and the only reason I have kept the iphone is because the neptune app is great. So if this new Droid app is the same or works easily I will upgrade in near future. Seriously though the Samsung Galaxy 4 and the HTS One are iphone killers. You cant even compare.
  2. Anyone near Burke VA have one I can borrow? I have a fish with a bad eye that needs to go into sick tank.
  3. I have had a pistol shrimp in my tank close to 2 years. This dude is mean. I think he is to blame for 2 purple fire fish missing. Now my Bang Cardinal is beat up on his bottom fins. I just thought these guys where 100% reef safe. Anyone else had an issue with them?
  4. I am trying to figure out why I am having to dose so much 2 part. Before Thanksgiving I was dosing 90 ml of two part daily and my calcium and alk is still going down 12 ppm a day. And this is for a 29 gallon tank. My Calcium was 420 alk 10.2 and with 5 days dropped to 360 and 7.8. BRS told me this was due to precipitation. My dosing pumps are dosing directly over my return pumps. My Mag is also high. Does anyone else have to dose more than the recommended amount? Just trying to figure out if I am doing anything wrong.
  5. I thought it was amazing. One powerful little critter. http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/wild/videos/killer-shrimp/
  6. I have a 30 gallon frag tank that has almost no livestock and I rarely lose power (underground lines). If anyone needs help or a place to put fish or corals let me know. I'm in Burke VA 22015.
  7. This could be historically bad. People should be ready and this has me very worried. I knew there was a storm coming but not like this. Meteorologists say it is likely to cause $1 billion in damages. So get your batteries and generators ready before the weekend. This looks like a 3 day storm and many will lose power if what they are predicting actually happens. http://news.yahoo.com/noaa-east-beware-coming-frankenstorm-171317994.html
  8. I wanted to copy everyone on a email question I had about the new Tunze skimmer line coming out. Thought it might help a few who have or are looking at the Tunze skimmers. Tunze, I currently have a 9002 skimmer and it fits in the back of my 29 gallon Oceanic Biocube. I saw the new 9004 model will be out in Sept. Will this fit in the rear chamber of a 29 gallon Oceanic Biocube? Andrew, It will not, that is why the 9002 will remain in the product line up. Over the next 2 years all of the current skimmers will see an overhaul and long term 9004 replaces 9006 and another model will replace the 9002 in about 18 months, it will have about the same performance but be more compact. Only the 9410 and the new 9415 and 9430 will remain unchanged, all other existing models will be replaced by new models by the end of 2014. Roger
  9. I have been looking for ways around this for some time and decided to take it a step further. I have contacted several vendors/manufactors on Pharmaceutical Grade Crystalline Calcium Chloride Dihydrate, Pharmaceutical Grade Sodium Bicarbonate, Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate and Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrate. I have received some feedback and am waiting for quotations. If this goes well I could consider buying this in bulk and then selling. This is as good if not better than BRS's product. The Crystalline Calcium Chloride Dihydrate is 99% pure, Pharmaceutical Grade Sodium Bicarbonate 99.5, Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate 98.2 and the Magnesium Sulfate Heptahydrateis 99.5. So this is very very good stuff. It will mix the same way as BRS's product. I really wanted to see if anyone was seriously interesting in bieng a part of this if I could buy cheap. Imagine cutting the BRS cost by 1/4 and maybe more. I do think this could be a great alternative. I hope to have a price in next few days.
  10. I just tried to use the BRS PH probes and both didn't work. One I had in storage for a few months and BRS was nice enough to send me another. Well I calibrated the new one and 5 minutes after being in my tank it stopped working. I wanted to see if anyone else had issues with BRS PH probes. I have a neptunes apex aqua controller and my last probe lasted for well over a year without issues. I was thinking about going back and buying either a Neptunes or p=Pinpoit PH probe. I also wanted to see if anyone had a preference between he 2.
  11. Just wanted to say thanks for a simple but very unique and important upgrade for me. I will use 2 1/4" compression fittings used for dosing 2 part run 2 BRS pumps along with my Apex. My tank is small so evey inch counts. I attached two compression fittings to my Intank Fish Saver Guard. With these pieces I can dose slowly and directly over my return. I love automation and anything that makes my life easier. Thanks agian Avast.
  12. I will soon be in the process of moving. I am trying to figure out what to do with my 4 ft long frag tank. I don't know if I should break it down or see if someone near Burke VA could keep it up and running for a few weeks. I don't know if someone would be willing to hold my livestock (2 shrimp, 2 clowns and lots of corals). I am open to ideas and would like to have a plan in place within next few weeks. I am willing to pay cash, give corals and I also have marine depot gift cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is probably the hardest thing I have to figure out before I move. The tank is in the way and I need to have a solution in place soon.
  13. Not on the Reef Octopus. I would imagine that it works very well. I will buy a reef octopus recirc on my next larger tank. The coral vue website has a nice description of the models, and seems to have a model for every need. Talk to Joe at fish world in Richmond, he is one of the largest sellers in the US for Reef Octopus. He can guide you in the right direction. In all the years I have done this you can waste alot of money on protein skimmers. Bubble King in my opinon is like burning money. RO should easily fill your need and save you some money.
  14. For the price Reef Octopus is the best in my opinon. It will do what you want and is made very well. Fish World in Richmond carries these at internet prices. Read all the customer feedback online on Marine Depot and BRS. It is a great value and very easy to use. My skimmer is very powerful and quiet.
  15. Don't worry to much about PH, it is usually misunderstood and very unclear to many aquarist. Measure your PH through the day and record. it should be high in the afternoon and lower in the morning unless you have a sump with lights. My PH is never them same. Probably around 8.3 in the evening and down to 7.7-7.8 in the morning. I have never had a problem and would consider this normal. So if you measured your PH around 2 PM and it reads at 7.9 than it should be fine. If it doesn't increase by 6-8 PM after the lights have been on a while than something is wrong.
  16. You should be fine. The amount the product recommends is not very accurate. It depends on how many SPS you have and how often you do water changes. I have had my tank well over 600 a few times and nothing bad happened. Stop dosing for 2 days than test for ALK and CAL. If it has gone down then restart the dosing and use half of previous amount. Just continue to watch ALK and CAL with kits and adjust as needed. No need to dose if you don't have many SPS.
  17. Sounds good, I'm in a similar situation. I also interested in tank and corals.
  18. a good read, i subscribe
  19. I settled for BRS 2 part, but I still want to try and get this directly from some source that sells food/pharm grade Cal, Alk and Mag powder. You wouldn't think it would be that hard to find, but it is. The main problem is in order to get this it would probably have to come in a super large order (like a pallet) and then would need to be broken down and stored somewhere. I just don't know if this could ever be done easily. I will continue to look and see if I can find anything.
  20. Avast because of ease of use, price and flexibility. I have 3 of them.
  21. I have a frag tank and almost all of the coral (softies, SPS & LPS) have lost some color. The SPS look washed out, but are still growing? I can see the base growth on small frags. I'm thinking this is because of the nutrient level. Its a fairly new tank (around 3 months) and just added 2 fish about a month ago. Not much livestock. I also have some cheato that seems to be doing very well. I've never dealt with something like this and just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or ideas on how to get the SPS to color back up. I'm thinking the more nutrients/food particle = better color. My water quality is very good, temp 78 and salt 1.026. Very strange, just don't understand the color loss. The PAR (T5's) is also good.
  22. looks great. The horn coral has grown a ton!
  23. Sorry to here. I think Milli's are highly under rated. I love see larger colonies of these.
  24. This is one of the things I love about these corals. At night the poylp extension is wild. The tips have huge beefy polyps that come out and it looks wild. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9sqJRVS35I&context=C44aaea6ADvjVQa1PpcFNRbiwq9nGdKtJv9be58Okj2B2NLkJE0gQ= http://www.reefflix.com/video/1377/LED-Moonlight-SPS-polyp-extension
  25. I have never changed out anything since I bought the unit. I'm guessing my water going into the RODI unit must be pretty good. I bought the unit knowing I would have a larger tank, it is over kill for what I have. I still would expect to change filters more often or have water that would get worse over time. Haven't noticed a difference really. It was at 0 TDS inline for about a year now around 2 TDS. I can tolerate that. I was going to change out once it got around 5, but I don't know when that is going to come.
