  1. https://www.liveaquaria.com/product/2648/?pcatid=2648 mcoskers flasher wrass is pretty darn cool, very colorful and fun, and does not look much like your normal wrasse, cant wait to get him some females, also my blue chromis seem to do pretty well. You really cant go wrong with a goby and shrimp pair either.
  2. Good news on nems, because I love them!!! So I'm considering getting a sea hare or lettuce nudi to eat algea and because i think that they look very cute... how toxic are these, I kinda really want one but like my clowns enough to not want to risk it if it could kill them.
  3. How toxic are anemones (standard BTAs & Rockflower types) in comparison? If one god forbid gets chopped up by a powerhead can you pick out all the major pieces and still be ok? What if one crawls under a rock and dies? Thanks
  4. I got mine through saltwateraquarium.com with a small 10% discount and 5% cashback for a total of 15% off which was nice.
  5. Very very troubling, reduced competition always sucks. Live Aquaria is by and far one of the best shippers of online aquatics... they are 10/10 in how well their animals are packed and arrive their alive arrival guarantee is also one of the industries best with refunds as opposed to store credit. I pray that they stay afloat otherwise this hobby is getting more expensive. I've used a lot of online live fish shippers and their animals always arrive happy and colorful unlike half dead ones I get sometimes elsewhere....
  6. Hey guys, So yea I considered a chiller and decided it was likely not going to be needed seeing as 69-71 is the warmest my house ever gets regardless of month in year. And researching aquarium chiller costs and costs to operate and noise considerations I'm almost thinking my house AC bill may end up being the cheaper and more comfortable solution for me in the long run anyways!!! haha Review of bayite Temperature Controller 1650W BTC211 Regardless of that the new device came in and so far color me very impressed, it was a breeze to set up, unlpugged the old, plugged in the new and it fired up my 500w finnex heaters without any issues and allowed .1 deg f variance adjustments no problems, surprisingly it even came rather calibrated and only needed a .2 degree f adjustment. It was easier to set up than the inkbird, capable of handling 1300w, and even has alarm options. The unit is also rather quiet with a barley audible click when it powers on the heater elements quieter than the running T5's so no issue there. I set the point of heating to 78.5 and allowed a .2 variance for a total of .4 degree total shift. It would have allowed me to set .1 variance at minimum for a total of .2 degree if I so choose but I'm gonna see how this works for now. Below is a comparison of previous unit vs current unit and by using seneye which has been calibrated to exact temps. Overall, this unit is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to use, and feels more robust and is laden with features. It's 30$ more expensive than the inkbird unit but well worth every dollar as long as it lasts a while. I'll give an update if everything is still working as expected in a few months and when/if it ever fails. If I don't update after my 3 month check in expect it's still working as expected! I also picked up a replacement probe for 10$ incase the one that came with it rusts. This is actually a huge benefit of this unit as the other unit's probe was hardwired and this unit has a 3.5mm jack that allows quick swap of temp probes.
  7. FYI, I have been rinseing with tap water on my hannah unit to no ill affect for about a month, i'll let you know if that continues to be the case. Also i ended up testing a new packet of solution after a month and the unit did not need to be recalibrated... so far so good! I love how handy it is, also it's temp readings are very accurate.
  8. Yea, replacements are pretty cheap under 10$ just wish something existed that is more permanent... totally makes sense happy to share so others dont have to wonder. But overall the current inkbird i'm using works but not great.
  9. @orgami I'll let you know how the new controller works see if its an improvement. Question would you say that rust (knowing that the probes im using will eventually rust, is not a big worry? I was just concerned that rust would kill some of the corals, inverts or anemones.
  10. So I have a minimum temp controller rating of 1000 watts because I have 2 500 watt heaters for redundant backup. The old 300 watt eheim would not get tank temps above 76 degrees, I keep my house a nice breezy 69 year round. Problem with current controller is that 1 degree adjustments allows for a total of variance of 2 degrees, this means my temps shift from 77-79 degrees every 30-40 minutes creating more instability than some of my more finicky items like. (a few are noticeably stressed by the constant 2 degree swings) Hence I just need a simple temp controller that allows for 1/10-5/10 of degree programming/variance. I dont need a more advanced system as I have everything else pretty well regulated through normal means, ATO, smart wifi dosing, wifi lights, etc etc. I literally only need heat control and didn't want to invest in a more complex system that is overkill. I even have an high temp cutoff that cuts off heat if controller fails on. I get that 1/10th may be hard... but i want to be able to have variance of no more than 1 degree I guess, 2 is just too vast. Currently I have 2 degree swings every half hour which is just really bad.... The Chicom stainless steel temp probes most definitely do rust very badly, initial signs after 3 months, fully rust encrusted within 12 months and unusable at 16 months. So i'm looking for either a temp probe that would fit that is either plastic or titanium to avoid future rust issues, otherwise thinking of my home jury rig idea, if anyone has replacement probes that would fit what i'm looking for that would be great. As far as ferric oxide i think it's a bit different as its already in that end state and nothing gets released into the water during the rusting process.
  11. Hi all, I need a decent heater controller that can handle up to 1000 watt heaters. Currently I have an https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01486LZ50/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and I'm not liking it because it allows a max deviation of temps, before unit turns on, of 1 degree f creating temp swings that go all the way from 77-79 degrees if I have it set at 78. Is there an inexpensive reliable solution that allows me to bring deviation down to .1 or .2 degrees? There are a lot of solutions, but i'm not willing to drop big $$ on a controller as i'm only gonna use temp functions.... Amazon would be preferred due to their fast shipping! Also the ability to calibrate the unit would be a huge plus as I have a very accurate temp probe i can calibrate it to. Would this unit be better? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KMA6EAM/ Also on the temperature probes, to my knowledge the probes will rust over time, as stainless is just that stain "less" not unsustainable or rust proof. I've been told rust is bad for corals... should i wrap it in a small baggy of DI water and submerge them in the tank that way to ensure that any rust particulates not get into my tank? Will this affect the accuracy of the probe much? I figure the surrounding water should make a small baggy of water the same temp relatively quickly. Or could I maybe Plasti-dip the probe? Even better does any organization sell titanium temp probes? Thanks!!
  12. When I go I think I'm going to have to tell the owner about the problem of their name/search results. As I was looking in the area too and think i remember seeing it and just glossing over cause Koi = pond to me. Perhaps should add Koi & Reef or something like that. He's probably lost a lot of business to this.
  13. Oh my... that is amazing!!! How much did that set you back? Did they have more when you were there?
  14. Very nice thanks so much for that! I'd never heard of blue ribbon koi and even if I did with a name like that I would have just skipped over it assuming its a pond shop!!!!
  15. Thanks A-a-ron! 90 gallons of total water with about 11x flow rate, that's measured water in the entire system and accounts for the amount of rock and sand displacement, sans those it would have more water. It's essentially a 75gal with an extra large sump giving it more water volume than normally possible. I didn't want to add those two beautiful clowns i saw recently because i'd hate for them to be in a tank sans anemone, just getting tired of dosing ammonia really lol so may need to bite the bullet and either overpay or risk it with a petsmart acquisition. Not looking for large fish seeing as they would not have that much room to swim, but looking more for teeming with life feel.
  16. Hey guys, My mixed reef tank is nice and cycled, running well, I have a CUC in there to eat the unwanted algea growth and a few corals that seem to be doing ok so far. All nice and stable, my issue is that I'm now in need for some livestock as I don't feel like constantly having to dose ammonia. Are there any marine LFS's out here in the northern Virginia area that have reasonable prices (Ie similar to online prices) and healthy good stock? If not similar pricing any that have good selection and healthy stock? The only place I've been in the NOVA area so far is Reefescape whose prices I thought were on the high side and selection a bit limited on livestock. I live in ashburn and work in arlington so somthing reasonably close less than 30mins from either or on the route would be good. I also frequent Leesburg area a fair bit. I dont want to order a bunch of fish all at once from an online vendor as i like adding livestock slowly as the health of the animal is very important to me and shipping costs kinda necessitate bigger orders online.
