Peppermint shrimp ate my corals
mari.harutunian replied to mari.harutunian's topic in General Discussion
Hopefully. I feed my tank pretty often but I guess the shrimp need often feedings. It only picked at the polyps of the stylo that were the brightest in color and most exposed to light... so I'm assuming it was also for taste. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I'm keeping the coral. See if I can bring it back to health. As for the shrimp... I don't want to kill it but my car is at the mechanics and I have no sump.. someone has already enquired about it though. I guess I should've had a real game plan because I thought no one would want a shrimp that eats coral. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Peppermint shrimp ate my corals

I've considered this and it really doesn't have the white lines of a camel shrimp. It did eat my aiptasia too. Wouldn't put it past my LFS to mix up the two though.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
I don't suppose anyone wants it? It ate one of my birdsnests and I thought nothing of it because it was dying already. Then it started eating my perfectly healthy pink stylo. I have no place to keep it so... it'll probably be dead by tomorrow. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

First SW tank - fish died, zoas closed. Need help
mari.harutunian replied to Nart's topic in General Discussion
The fish may have just been sick from the get go and couldn't handle the stress of changing to a new tank. Zoas honestly are the most temperamental corals in my tank and it was due to not properly light acclimating. You'd think putting them at the bottom of the tank would be enough but it wasn't for the ones I had until I put them in shade. Keep an eye on them though and the yasha goby. How to make my tank the best it can be
mari.harutunian replied to mari.harutunian's topic in General Discussion
I don't really know what to look for in an ATO so I'm cautious about posting in the WTB section. And if it doesn't function correctly idk what I'd do. I do test phosphates and they register around .1ppm. I have the tunze 9004 skimmer. Works amazingly. Honestly the only thing keeping the tank as good as it is. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

ATO is now at the top of my list. Maybe I can win one at the frag swap lol... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

I'll look into getting an ATO for sure. I'll start giving myself a good schedule and stick to it this time. Any advice on if I should keep my sandbed? It's gotten better since I reduced the photo period. Still has lots of detritus. Might replace it with a GSP mat. Isn't a par meter super expensive? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Oh and my snails are breeding/bred. I saw eggs and larvae about a month ago. Don't see any eggs now but there's still larvae swimming above the sand. Saw about 3 of these tiny snails too. About the size of a rice grain. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

These are the Ai hydras I purchased in the sale section here! They look great and work great! Putting the mount together was a pain though. After I finished, i turned the light and it cut through the power supply wire... had an extra luckily. The screws also have a tendency to strip and then you can never tighten it all the way. Now I have one wire coming off of each side of the mounts because I was fed up with disassembling it so much. I also got a new coral from Today's Pet. They are a decent livestock store. Their shrimp have had a few problems like parasites and bacterial infections but if you point it out their staff do their best to correct that kind of stuff. The bag for the coral was leaking pretty badly when I brought it home so I panicked and just plopped it into the tank and surprisingly it has been doing just fine. It seems to have some kind of black sponge on it. Kind of cool. Speaking of sponges and/or unknown organisms... This thing has grown quite a bit. Started as one ball and is now about six. My next upgrade will be an ATO probably. Next livestock will be a clown goby and probable lots of stuff from the frag swap lol. Just got back from vacation and my tank is in need of a water change. Luckily I'm sick and have no water made... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I need help with scheduling, equipment, water changes, testing, and how to set up my new media tumbler for GFO and/or carbon 1. What's the best schedule for feeding the tank? I have various foods(mysis, reef roids, flakes, pellet, Krill, brine shrimp, & phyto Plankton) for the various fish, inverts, and corals. I usually just mix it up for the fish every other day and then the corals once a week. Phyto twice a week for feather dusters and a porcelain crab. 2. Should I invest in a ATO system? I have an open top. Every three days I need to put in at least a gallon. 3. How often and how much water should be changed for a 36 gallon tank? And what is the best way to handle the water?? I've considered the trash bins but they're huge and my tank is in my bedroom. It's not impossible to though. Water changes have just been such a hassle. Maybe the trash bins are right... I can make excess water. 4. How often should I test all the different things? I have all the test kits I just need a concrete schedule to do them... so far I've been guessing. 5. I just got the CPR nano tumbler from BRS intending to run GFO but the package says I need the fine media kit... do I need it? Can I just put it in a filter sock and then in the tumbler? I'd love to hear what you guys think. I have all the means just not the experience to run my tank the best I can. And u can just put the # of the question you answer if that's easier. Thanks Mari

Sounds like you have a plan! Tell me how the chemi-pure and purigen works for you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

40 ppm is very high. I think I put fish in at 20 ppm and snails in at 15 ppm bc the algae was unbearable. Try and get it as low as you can with water changes or maybe add some macro algae. As for the water changes, I think more is better just to get those nitrates out. 50% will bring you down to 20ppm and then another 50% a few days later should bring you near 10ppm. 25% will bring you to 30ppm and then a following 10% will only bring you to 27ppm. I'm not the best at math or reef tank ownership so ask maybe some experts will chime in. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

He looks angry [emoji38] love that coral on top! What is it? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Guess I'm just impatient with growing corals hilariously enough the fastest growing coral in my tank is probably a birdsnest. With a nano tank you should probably avoid the fast ones because they will fill the tank fast. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'm by no means an expert at cycles but I think people recommended 50% to me. Never did it... always did 10% weekly then went to 10% every two weeks... but hey my nitrate went down. Probably could've avoided some algae with a 50% change. I'd ask someone more experienced to be sure. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Looks like you have a ways to go for your cycle. I don't think I ever saw that much ammonia in my tank during my cycle ever. What method are you using? I used biospira and a shrimp. As for the corals all at once, I did it, but as many people would agree, it's not suggested. Corals add nothing to the bioload but if there's something wrong with the water or the parameters aren't stable you could kill everything. I started with Xenia and GSP but added 17 frags from the PA frag swap at one time. Mine turned out okay. The corals I lost of those 17 were because of poor light acclimation and sickness. I'd start with a few cheap and easy frags to start. Mushrooms are usually always bullet proof. More so than zoas. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Zoanthids are a pretty good pick. Any euphyllia (frogspawn/torch coral/ hammer coral) is moderate care level so it's not something that is bulletproof. I've killed a hammer coral by dropping it and it getting infected. Ive also had one get brown jelly maybe because I purchased it sick. You may want some mushrooms, Xenia, clove polyps, or leather corals. If you're afraid of them getting out of control then put them on a separate rock. The Xenia will still drop branches occasionally though. My 3" xenia has dropped little polyps twice even though it has room to grow. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It honestly depends. I've seen a 5 gallon nano with mostly Xenia which looks cool but a 20 gallon with all Xenia just looks like an indistinct mass of pink. I think you have to consider the shape and polyp size compared to your tank size as well as what a colony looks like and if you'll be content with only one. I went to a frag swap and told myself "only get soft coral" and boy was I wrong. I wanted everything. And bought everything. I like to think of it like a garden. I like variety, but an all rose garden is beautiful too.
