  1. +1 Scott you need to post more pics. So it's been 2 weeks and so far so good, my Spath colonies didn't brown out or dying. I placed them on top with high indirect flow. Check out below for some colonies shot i took earlier today. Full shot of purple tip colony Macro shot of the purple tip - It's so tasty Pink and red tip colony Golden colony - love this color
  2. Just don't be fooled by the famous names he put on his corals, they are like generic and want to be stuff but they are cheap
  3. Make sure to not let it floating around the tank, you want to scrape and remove the dying part after 1st or 2nd zap.
  4. You can google it or try this one http://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/385922/diy-aiptasia-zapper Very easy to do, cheap and highly effective.
  5. Also check out majano wand.
  6. Also make sure to turn off all flows.
  7. That sound like a good plan Jack. If I were you I would measure calcium and nitrate also.
  8. The thing with dosing kno3 is you also raising potassium. I'm not sure what effect of high potassium to alk.
  9. Kinda weird where your Alk went down so much and Cal is still high. From my understanding alk and cal usually move together unless you have a partial nitrogen cycle. Based on the following article. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2002/11/chemistry "The vast majority of alkalinity depletion in most tanks also comes about by the precipitation of calcium carbonate, as described above. In this process, as alkalinity is depleted by 1 meq/L, calcium will be depleted by 20 ppm. There are some other processes that can lead to alkalinity depletion, including partial cycling of nitrogen (from organic compounds to nitrate and no further) and the incorporation of magnesium into calcium carbonate, but these are generally much less important than calcification."
  10. I'm glad it doing well Jack. Don't worry I'll have more cool frags by the next meeting
  11. Ph probe is a must have if running a CR, will make things a lot easier.
  12. Congrats! I'm sure your corals love you now
  13. Wow nice size colony you got there Scott. How long have you had it? Did it brown out on you at first or will you able to keep it original color? What kind light do you have? Thanks for sharing
  14. That's awesome I would love to see some of your pictures. Yes they are huge, it's like they've been on steroids
  15. Thanks for sharing that is interesting about feeding oyster eggs. Might have to try that.
  16. Yeah they are on dd all the time but I never seen one in people tank that thriving. Hopefully someone on here has one.
  17. Sure but the color won't be that nice, just a brown stick
  18. So my new addiction is Aussie Acropora Spathulata. I've tried to google but not much info on these beauties. Anybody here have experience with these coral that you can share? I've read they will likely to brown out and much harder to keep than bali millipora. If you have successful growing these in your tank please share your experience and show off your pictures. Happy reefing!
  19. Just tell her you"ll skip lunch and use the money for reef.
  20. Jack, If you don't have anything to do this weekend you can make some alk calibration solution and test it with your current test kit, you can do this by using some baking soda and reef calculator. I think this will at least let you know if your test kits are good.
  21. "So I tested my freshly made RC water tonight. As expected, it has an Alk of ~9.5 dkh and a CA of ~ 460 at 1.025. I then tested my tank water for Alk just for sh*ts and giggles and it gave me the same Alk of 5 dkh. So..as much as I wanted my tests to be inaccurate, I think they are." I've read on few other forums the alk in RC salt suppose to be around 12 dkh, even last year when I was using RC salt i tested the fresh mix and got 12 dkh. So if your test kit is off by 3 then your real alk in the tank is 8 which is the norm.
  22. I had some acro Stn with healthy pe still attached before especially milli species. It's hard to tell for sure from the picture if it actually stn. Either way you will know for sure by tomorrow morning. Good luck!
  23. Jack, is the frag you got from me still doing well? My alk is around 10-11dkh so I will be surprise if it still doing well in that low alk. I would suggest to test again with other test kit before dosing and raising alk in your tank.
  24. I have a yellow caroliniana too but it was a wild colony. I placed it in the middle at first and burned a few tips, now it's in the bottom of the tank. Is your wild or tank raised?
