  1. I use gloves.  It is to protect both myself and my tank.  There is so much bacteria in a reef tank that a small cut on the hand could get seriously infected.  On top of that, I don't want anything that was on my hand disturbing my coral and fish health.

  2. A skimmer rated too high for your tank is not really a good thing. If the neck is too big your skimmer won't run efficiently. I had a skimmer rated for 160 gallons on my 60 gallon and it wouldn't pull too much out. When I went to a 100 gallon rated skimmer it pulls out all kinds of nasty gunk. I had a phone conversation with someone at coral vue who told me he cringes when he hears people recommend skimmers rated two or three times the tanks volume.

  3. My tank is 2 years old next week and in the last 30 days for some reason or another the coralline has just taken off.  Not sure if it had anything to do with the fact that I ditched GFO about a month ago?  Are you currently using GFO?

  4. I have seen great tanks that have been LED / Halide / or T5, but I have seen very few great tanks that were LED since the beginning.

I have yet to see a TOTM on Reefcentral that has been LED only since the beginning of the tank.  All of them are MH or T5 (or a combo of the two).

Why are you considering switching?  Bulb replacement/Cost/Heat?  If things are working now, don't change it.

Chucelli--a wamas member-- won reef central tank of the month last year.  He not only uses LEDs, but he built them himself.  His tank is amazing.

  5. Thanks all....I'm gonna get a syringe this weekend and try some of these suggestions.  It's just in such a weird place that there isn't much I can do about it other than some type of injection.

  6. I have a mushroom that is poking through a montipora and killing it. This is impossible for me to clip away at unless I break off a large chunk. How can I kill it? Is there something I can inject into it with a syringe?

  7. Maybe one of you kind people can help me.  I've contacted apex but all they wanna do is exchange hourly emails.........

Basically I can't access my apex data outside my wifi network....when I'm at work I have no clue if my temp is 0 or 212 degrees.  This just started yesterday after 7 or 8 months of perfection.

The apex guy wrote this to me:

Thank you for your inquiry. I believe I know what's happening. I think the Verizon Router had removed your previously set port forwarded rule.

I've seen this occur before on Verizon routers. You will need to log into your Verizon Router and add it again. I'm unsure why this occurs but it is something I have known to happen to users.

So I went into my fios router and there are all kinds of options which I don't really understand.  There are drop down menus for Source Ports (any or specify), then another for destination ports (any or specify), then forward to port (same as incoming or specify).   I know I have to choose a port number which I have done before.

Any help is much appreciated as I have no clue when neptune will actually answer their phone......

  8. I have the pro.  I did the exchange from G1 to proG2.  I'm happy with it, but this light is extremely strong---I have mine on less than 60% and its all all SPS tank.  I probably would have been fine just sticking with the G1 but I'm a sucker for new technology.  100 bucks doesn't sound that bad.  I guess it all depends on what kind of tank you have.

  9. I am wondering if there is a best time of day to do nitrate and phosphate tests.  Earlier in the week I did a phosphate test at about 8pm using my hanna ULR tester and got .17, then a few minutes later I got .16  I thought this seemed high, which is why I repeated it.  The next morning, I did it again, only this time I got .06, which is what I am used to--and even repeated the test and got virtually the same reading.  I guess I got the higher reading because a few hours before I fed some frozen foods.  I emphasize it was a few hours before, not a few minutes before.   Is it best to do your tests in the morning after the skimmer has had all night to export nutrients?  Would this time period most accurately reflect the numbers in the tank?

  10. I had a worm that I suspected was a bobbit worm in an old tank. Corals were munched on, specifically zoas. I ended up removing the live rock and drying that piece out.....after that all corals thrived.
