  1. I love my tiny yellow clown goby. When i first put him n the tank my yellow watchman goby literally had it in its mouth because he got too close. The ywg immediately spit him out and began opening and closing his mouth rapidly for a few minutes. The clown goby has a protective slime that apparently tastes horrible as a defense mechanism. Now he (all 3/4 inch of him) rules the tank. No one not even the clownfish 5 times bigger messes with him. He perches on coral but i haven't seen any tissue damage. Live aquaria does say that they lay eggs on acro that causes some tissue damage.

  2. Just was on the ecotech website and got the news about the new radion and how they are going to handle the upgrade for people who have the first generation. Instead of having to buy a new 650 dollar generation 2, starting in Quarter 1 of 2013 you can have them send you the new one, and they will enclose a postage paid box where you would send them your old one. That way you won't lose a day of lights. This is of course not free, but 150 bucks. For people like me with have the TIR lens, they will knock off 30 bucks so it would be $120. I think this is more than fair (although I am sure people will disagree) considering when I buy an Ipod and the new one comes out a few months down the road there is no upgrade available other than buying a brand new one.

  3. How about have a few of the same corals... use one as your control....feed one a certain brand of coral food...feed the other another kind of food...then track the growth over a period of time. Its been done many times in real labs and should be relatively easy.

  4. I'm keeping it around 9.5 because I have noticed everything in the tank gets a little fussy when it is below 9. The tank is going to mostly sps (the easier ones). There are corals in the tank, but most of them are just frags that are beginning to grow which is why calcium isn't being sucked down at a rapid rate.

  5. I have brightwell aquatics reef code a and b. Right now I don't have enough coral in my tank that are lowering my calcium to levels that need dosing. I am changing 15% of my water each week in my 60 gallon so it is replenishing whatever is being taken in my the coral. I have been checking alkalinity almost daily and notice that every 4-5 days my ppm goes down a bit so I have been dosing the "B" part once or twice a week. Is it ok to be just dosing the "B" part or should I be doing both "A" and "B"? I do understand the purpose of the A and B is to stabilize and not raise levels but I am able to raise the alkalinity by putting a few extra milliliters in the tank. I just don't see the point of putting A in right now if the tank doesn't need it unless there is some reason I should be. Thanks

  6. So I had a few red blankets on my sandbed. Just an immature tank as I use RO/DI water and feed sparingly. I figured it will go away in a few weeks (same thing happened about 4 months into my old tank also and it went away over time). I visited Quantum Reefs a few days ago and picked up two conches. I was darn near amazed to actually watch both of them destroy the red blanked. I literally sat at my tank this evening for an hour and watched one of them take out a patch of 4 square inches of redcyano and the area is now pristine white sand. If you are interested in one contact QR. They are really cool creatures and I believe they were only like 8 bucks.

  7. You can put it on a small piece of live rock, then put that in a wide cup (like an empty hummus container). Eventually it will attach. That is what I did with a baby maxima and it worked.

  8. I'm moving the wetside of an MP10 from a tank that had some bubble algae to my display tank that has no algae in it. I want to be sure that whatever is on the mp10 is completely dead before I put it in the display tank. Currently I have it sitting in a bucket with 1 part vinegar and 2 parts RO/DI water. What else can I do to make sure that nothing is transferred into the display tank? Do you think boiling the wetside would do the trick? Is that even safe for the MP10? I can't rely on visually removing every piece of bubble algae because there are too many crevices in the mp10. I've already found a few small pieces of BA on the propeller. I've heard bubble algae can surving a month or so in totally darkness, but what about keeping it in the sun to dry it out for a day or two? Any help is appreciated.

  9. Hi everyone.

So I'm fairly new but have been cycling my 90G tank with 90 lbs of Vanuatu LR (uncured) for about 2 months now. About a month ago, I notice some life forms start to pop up including a lot of reddish forams and also 3 suspicious lifeforms (pictured below). #1 (about 5-6 mm in diameter) completely retracts into its hole at the slightest shadow, movement or vibration. #2 (about 7 mm in diameter) is not as sensitive but does retract but when it does, its tube is still sticking out (feather duster?). #3 (about 7-9 mm) doesn't seem to retract. All of these so far appear as solo specimens and have not formed colonies (at least not yet). But any thoughts on the ID would be great because I have the Aiptasia X and I'm not afraid to use it. Thanks :o)

    definitely feather dusters

  10. I have about 2 inches of sand in my tank that I set up 4 months ago. It is super fine sand that looks great but of course it blows around everywhere. My question is, can I start adding about a half inch of larger diameter sand on top of this to prevent so much from blowing around? I do have fish and coral in there now so I don't want to upset the balance very much. Basically, am I stuck with this sand?

  11. I had a biocube that used to get up to 83 degrees. When it hit 82 I would just get a fan and direct it toward the biocube from a about 3 feet a way and keep the feeding lid open. It would get the tank down to 80 in just a couple hours. That was only when it was 90+ degrees outside so I only had to do it for the months of July and August. It works well though.

  12. Ok it seems as though I figured out the problem. It looks as though he is constipated. I see "stuff" trying to come out, but it looks too large to pass. Anything I can do about this? He ate a tiny bit of food last night, but nothing today.
