  1. I've had this guy for 7 months now. Still a juvenille. Got another clown about a month or so ago. They instantly hit it off and swam together, slept together. Never fought. A few days ago I saw him huddled in the place where he normally sleeps while the other clown roams the tank. For 3 days now he hasn't eaten and stays in the same place that he sleeps. The other clown is ignoring him. There are no signs of infection and he does swim out to the front of the tank to see me, then goes back to his corner. I did every chemistry test possible last night and everything is perfect....no ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate. Temp is steady at 79. My top off water is from my RODI unit. I haven't changed or added anything for well over a month. I even did about a 30% water change just incase I missed something. Fed Rod's food (with a couple drops of garlic extreme) and of course the other fish went nuts. He just kind of looked at it and ignored it. I have read that sometimes when pairing up the male dejected clown will hang out in the sleeping area by himself but eventually they will get back together. I am hoping this is the case. I have a QT tank with medication just in case, but I don't want to medicate for something that can't be diagnosed. Any suggestions?

  2. I know nothing about this.......is there a such thing as a device could monitor temperature remotely. I am looking for something that I could install in my tank and log onto the computer remotely to check the temp in my tank. So far I google'd it a bit, but most of what I saw that is available would have to be hard wired into a computer at my house. I can't seem to find anything wireless. My heater went out the other day while I was at work and my temp was down to 75 in the tank (it's in my basement which is always cool even in summer)...not a big deal now but if this was February it would have been in the 60's. Yes, I have now switched to the dual heater method after that happened.

  3. I have the Radion over my 60 gallon cube. It is a recently set up tank (a little over 3 months). Just wondering what you guys/gals have your settings at. I am running 8 hours natural at 75%, then 4 hours of blue moonlight at 20%. I have been slowly increasing intensity for the last 1.5 months. I have been raising it about 3-4% every 2 weeks. I'm looking for advice from people who have seen nice coral growth using their radion. It is a mixed reef but since it is so new I didn't load up on many coral yet. Thanks in advance.

  4. I like Aquarium One. I live within jogging distance of it so I go there frequently. The guys that work there have always been real helpful and never pushy. I bought my tank from them and some tank equipment. They can order things for you that come quickly. They don't cram a lot of fish in the tanks. Usually only 3 or so fish in one tank. I can get things online for cheaper but if it isn't a huge difference I will go ahead and buy it there to support a small local business.

  5. Not sure that rocks need to be basted daily. I do mine weekly (usually :-). Obviously you are getting to weekly water changes. If he is handy, converting the outlet to gfci may be more reliable during power failure (usually don't need to be reset)

Thanks Steve. I don't think he is able to change out the outlet, but thankfully he doesn't live in this area and have PEPCO so he doesn't really lose power much at all. In fact when I lived there I can't remember one single time we lost power for more than 3 hours....but that is another subject indeed............

  6. My point is that if you make your list too onerous, many would just say screw it and ignore it all and do their own thing. I know if I got a doom and gloom list like that I would.

I kept a BC29 a long time. I did not do anything on your daily list daily (though I did have an ATO and a temp controller) and I might have done the things on your 3 day and every week lists every couple months.

Well I can tell you the person is not going to say "screw it" and ignore the advice. I put the thread up for people to look at and add anything that I might have missed.

  7. Vince really goes above and beyond with his level of service. Not only did he offer me the best prices around, but he delivered everything to my door on a Saturday morning.

I will be sure to continue to do business with Quantum Reefs in the future.

    Thanks guys,

    Mike

Ditto...just got back from there and picked up salt that was half the price of what I would find at the fish stores near my place.

  8.

A little dramatic don't you think?

NEVER EVEREVER EVER EVER use water from your sink. Everything will be poisoned and die.

There are plenty of reasons not to use tap water, and I don't recommend doing so, but its not poison and it probably isn't going to kill everything.

Well...I gotta make my point. In a 10 gallon tank even a few cups of tap water can destroy a nano. I've kept 3 nano tanks already and I know from experience there is absolutely no margin for error.

  9. I am giving my old man my biocube. My 60 gallon is quite enough tank for me to handle right now. He is sort of new to the hobby. He did have a saltwater tank in the 70's so he does have some basic knowledge. I will not be there to help him since he lives in Pittsburgh. Here is a list I have made. I would love people to chime in and let me know what I am forgetting----I know there is a lot more but I kind of want just the basics for now. It is a biocube so there is no skimmer, sump, etc. I am going to bring it up and set everything up with some lessons. The tank is fully cycled to so I am going to pick him up a clownfish and maybe a small goby. He is going to be bringing water samples to his LFS for testing too. He is not going to be getting a RODI unit for this tank. Please feel free to give me any tips or do's/don'ts that I can add for him. He is very excited to start up this hobby again.

    Tank Maintenance

    Daily

  10. So this morning I went to feed the fish and my clown gobie is missing.

Tiny little tomato is lost or possibly ....

I have been looking all over the tank. Checked the surrounding floor area.

Maybe the trumpet coral got it not sure. But I fed the trumpet frogspawn and fungia last night.

Any Ideas? The other fish are clowns, watchman w/ pistol. Damsel and 6 line.

Maybe he went down the watchman hole?

My yellow watchman goby jumped into overflow and took a ride through plumbing into the sump the other night.....maybe yours did the same thing?

  11. I have a fairly immature tank that has been set up for a little more than 2 months.....60gallons. I have been using natural seawater but will be switching to synthetic soon. Tank only has about 10 pieces of coral (mostly small frags) and 2 small fish. I checked my calcium levels twice today and both times they were around 540. I checked the alkalinity and it was ok at 9.5 dkH. Any thoughts why it would be that high? Obviously it is bad if it is too low for the coral but what about too high?

  12. I bought 4 of these battery powered airpumps a few weeks ago just in case. I have 3 tanks (a 60g, a 14g, and a 5g). I put 2 in the 60g, and one each in the 14g and 5g. I lost zero fish and my power was out for 4 days. They are really cheap and on 2 D batteries each one last over 50 hours! I am buying a generator next week should this happen again but I highly recommend these little guys.

  13. Mine has been growing quite well, but it is almost a pinkish-grey color. I've seen quite a few other specimens in tanks where they are green or blue colored. I read that they really don't like light much at all. Mine has been right under LEDs. I'm thinking I should move it in the shade. Anyone else have experience with this coral? Thanks

  14. I have the same return pump as you. Love it. It is super quiet and you can adjust the flow on it. Check the instruction manual but you can dial it down as low as under 400gph if you think the flow is too much.

  15. I've never done a QT tank but I bought a 10 gallon with an aquaclear HOB filter and a heater. The HOB filter came with a carbon bag, sponge filter, and some bio-stones. I decided to leave the bio-stones out because I don't think I will be running the QT 24/7. I just put a green chromis in on Friday evening and he's doing fine. I am going to be ultra careful with my new tank so I want to keep him in the QT for a full 3 weeks. My question is......what should I do to make sure the QT tank water is appropriate for the chromis? Should I change the water? If so how often and how much? THanks.
