  3. when you make the sides of the stand out of plywood, go and make a frame out of 2x4 for the top and screw them to the plywood and glue them as well, then put your plywood top on and no need to worry abour plywood bowing as the weight is now distrubted to the plywood sides hope this helps
  4. so sorry to hear this....I like you did not qt until I got a fish from a so called clean supplier and killed alot of my fish like you....I now do a qt on new fish just in case....let us know when you start looking for new fish and I am sure we as members will be able to come up with something
  5. Ok I have been doing alot of reading on different meds to give to newly shipped fish and was wanting to get some of your alls input on this as well....
  6. I believe they are called asternia starfish (spelling might be wrong) they are harmless and a good addition to they clean up crew.... they will reproduce fast in an well established system.... I have alot in my 45 and no issues with them....
  7. per engineering specs you will have around 1280 pounds total in weight with the tank give or take several pounds..with a 2x4 on edge of a span of 3 foot its limits are around 1200pounds with them being on 16 inch centers...If it were mine I would go with 2x6 to be safe...you are only talking about aniother 2 inches of height if you need to keep your height right under the stand for plumbing... Also in your picture with the tank sitting on the stand you will need to run a brace down under the 2x6 where the tank ends and run a header just like the front is...if you want to get away from any supports in the middle from left to right just place 2 2x6 together on the front and back side...hard to explain without showing you....
  8. Ok my supplier called me back and according to him the big difference between prestone and food grade is the food grade is more pure calcium than the prestone is...he said the prestone can contain as much as 100 different impurities that they will only list if there is a certain number of them detected when the batch is run...food grade filters these out as such you get pure calcium with very little to no impurties in it
  9. ok according to the msds sheets on prestone drive way heat it is only 90 -92% calcium chloride with other additives included in it...calcium chloride food grade msds sheet shows only calcium chloride and no other additives...I have a call into my calcium supplier to find out the difference in food grade and prestone drive way heat calcium...will pass info on when I get it...
  10. I have checked in my area for dow flakes with no luck at all...the dow flakes are food grade which is different from any other calcium you find for sale...I can get 50 pounds of cailcuim chloride for 10. buck a bag but will not work as it is not food grade....I have only been able to find on the internet for sale nothing local in my area...let me know if you find any in your area

  12. Ok here is the system 180 gallon reef ready with 55 sump running gfo in reactor, carbon in bag in high flow in sump, I have been dosing alk with the two part diy from on line.... tested my mag and it was low so I started dosing the mag for the 2 part, well my mag has gone from 900 down to not reading on the test kit from red sea. I have tested the kit with my other tank and it is ok, tested my fresh saltwater and it is 1100 cal-470 ph-7.9-8.01 nitrate-0 nitrite-0 pho-0 I have no idea what is causing my mag to drop in my system so any help please
  13. what u have the link to will work as long as you do not go over 12amps going thru it.... do u have any electrical experience at all?
  14. if it is empty you can put a computer screen up to it and look thru the glass with polorized glasses to tell if it is tempered... if it is the glass will look like it has lines going thru it... if not it will be clear
  15. you are getting air locked inside the line....from the cavation going on as long as that keeps happening you will keep the air bubbles no matter how much you throttle it down....that is why I stayed away from hooking anything to my return lines or intake lines for that reason alone alot of people had problems with it in the beggining and I did not want to fool with getting it just right....you can do it, it will just take some adjusting on your part like stopping the water from sucking air back into the lines....
  16. Welcome back....I am sure you will get alot of excellent info from all on here...I know I have
  17. interested in the tanks they stil for sale?
  18. Ok checked Mag and it is under 840 so it is very low....I have the mixture ready for the mag to dose I will need to raise this slowly like everything else right....over several days
  19. Will check my mag in a few... I have tested my ph with my apex and a new red sea test kit to make sure my apex was right....all other tests are only a few months old.... tank has been up for over a year now not running a calcium reactor dosing the 2 part DIY using baking soda and dow flakes for the cal....
  20. man oh man my mandrins can eat for a year on that thing....
  21. Ok I have been fighting my PH for some time now.... My parms Sal:1.025 Cal:460 Alk:2.0 PH:7.89 to 8.01 so I have been dosing Alk to bring it up to 2.8 but have been unsuccessfull in doing so....I am dosing 4 oz a day and it is still dropping back to 7.9.... I have a gfo running and carbon in sock in high flow area of sump... My new saltwater checks at Cal 460, Alk 2.8....did a water change today and checked my Alk and it is still on the low side.... I guess I need to start dosing Kalk to help bring my ph up where I want it to be of 8.2 to 8.3.... any suggestion
  22. cool thanks alot for all the info on this
