  1. I remember Michaelg had Eric Borneman ID these and he said it was a type of Carribbean coralimorph. That's about all I remember. You can search here for Mike's thread or over on RC. George
  2. House of Tropicals isn't that bad. They have fish transhipped in on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday so there is a good chance you may see not so good fish because they are stressed from the long plane ride. They do get in nice fish other stores don't get but people know when the shipments come in a buy them within a day or two. It's always worth a stop at all stores. Their coral prices marked on the tanks are often wrong. If you want a price you need to ask. They carry 200g boxes of IO salt for $40 I think. Aquarium Center has been the worst store in town for several years. Even as bad as it was I still would go there to see what they got in. From time to time they would get in unusual fairy wrasses, butterfly's, gobies, and corals. They usually didn't know market price for their livestock so you could get a bargain on some livestock items if you know what you're looking at and it's value. Exotic Aquatics is the nicest store in town. They have a fairly new storefront so it's very clean. They bring in rare fish and corals all the time but they know what they have and charge accordingly. If you go there you'll but something, it's a great store and definitely my favorite. They are stock 200g boxes of IO salt. George
  3. On my 280g I have a GenX40 plumbed into the sump which is a 100g stocktank. I plug the pump in an pump the sump dry. It takes less then 10 minutes to drain 65-70 gallons. I have two 44 g brute trash cans with fresh RO/DI saltwater each with a Mag 7 in them. I place a 3/4" hose on the pump and pump the sump back to full. Total time is about 20 minutes for 65-70 gallons every 2 weeks. Since this water change is hands free I use the down time to clean the skimmer, and any other maintenance near the sump which is needed. George
  4. I used Black Diamond for years but in a reverse reactor the stuff floats and gets clogged to easily. I have switched to Kent's reef carbon. This is a pellet type of carbon and doesn't float or get clogged like Black Diamond. George
  5. I think in some cases less air makes smaller bubbles. This is why people are modifying their needle wheel skimmers with the Enkamat mesh. More air, smaller bubbles, more skimming. George
  6. I don't know about keeping these with seahorses but I doubt a nano will do because you need a fairly deep substrate for these shrimp to dig in. I have one in my 280g. It's a tiger pistol and originally it was paired up with a Tangaroa goby. One day I came home to find the Tangaroa was kicked out and a Wheeleri was paired up with the shrimp. I also have an Aurora and a Randall shrimp gobies but neither of them have tried to pair up (yet). I wouldn't worry about the seahorse eating the shrimp because the shrimp never comes out of the burrow unless the goby is protecting the opening. Very fun to watch this combo. Just be sure your rock work is stable because they create all kinds of caverns in the sand. JMO George
  7. Rapid Tissue Necrosis. Basically sloughing of the tissue. George
  8. That coral to me looks like a green birdsnest (seriatopora). I too have had difficultly keeping them in the past while other sps have grown like mad. I have seen larger shielded limpets do damage like this. It's definitely a weird type of RTN since it's in the middle of the coral and not from the base. George
  9. I would try to get a different type of Genicanthus angel. I have the Bellus and they are even harder to get but seem to do better over the long term and their colors don't fade out. Wantanabie don't seem to do well past 1 year. Do you still have yours Rik? Semifasciatus and Melaonspilus seem to fade out too. Lamarks keep their color but the male and female look very similar to start with. Red sea Zebras seem to keep their colors to but are also difficult to find. IME, the Bellus are your best bet for Genicatnhus for maintaining color and long lifespan in a captive environment. George
  10. I saw this efflo today and it's got to be 20" across. Absolutely amazing tank. George
  11. I have 9 of them and none of these anthias have ever jumped. I have has several other types of anthias jump though. Unless you have other fish that chase them you should be fine. George
  12. I have a frag of green galaxia, a big frag of green echinophyllia, fresh cut pulsing sinularia frags, blue acropora yongei frags, small mounted frag of purple yongei. Trades welcome George
  13. 1 looks like an encrusting montipora, 2 looks like fire coral (millipora). The others look like what Doug mentioned. George
  14. I too never knew they were jumpers but she did jump. I actually had my first female Bellus jump out the same night I got her. Luckily I got another one the next day. I recently moved so all my tanks are gone but 3. That's al I have set up at the new house. We can hook up anytime, just let me know in advance. George
  15. I had a pair of the blackspot swallowtails. Genicanthus Melanospilus. They hid and didn't eat for about a week but once they stared eating they were fine. After about 1 year in captivity the male lost all of his striping and looked identical to the female. After about 2 years the female jumped out of the tank. After many attempts to get another one in the tank with no luck I gave up on them. About 3 weeks ago I moved the male to a new house and during the process the bag he was in sprung a leak and was DOA once he arrive to the new tank. I have no personal experience with Wantanabie but I do have a pair of Genicantus Bellus. These fish seem to eat PE MYSIS right out of the bag and not hide at all. The female I've had for about 3 years and the male only a short time. My original male lived for 18 months until one day I came home from work and he was dead. No signs of anything. Time will tell what will happen with this new male. George
  16. I have a Potters, a Bi color, male and female Bellus, and a Chrysurus all together in a 280g. The Bicolor is not aggressive at all. I tried to put a Golden in here about a year ago but the Potters angel and Chevron tang just about killed him. George
  17. I have a Milwaukee and it works perfectly. Priced better then the Pinpoint too. George
  18. The coral which lineage can be traced is not the true Leng Sy cap. Paletta said he never fragged it and his frag was the last piece known to be alive. If Paletta never fragged it (and he would know) then Sanjay never would have received a frag. So inturn Bill, John, Don or you wouldn't have a frag of it. The cap in Paletta's tank is just a common purple rim cap IMO. People in search of rare frags will buy anything with a name that resembles the coral they want. I still have a frag of Paletta's cap. George
  19. I'm pretty sure John got his frag from Bill Glascock, who got it from Sanjay who got it from Paletta who got it from Leng Sy. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that's what John told me. 2 years ago I stopped by Mike Paletta's house and purchased a frag of his "leng sy" cap. It looks nothing like the original. I grew my frag out into a colony and gave away dozens of frags. This coral is a weed and certainly can not be a LE coral by any means. Most of CMAS has this coral now and not one of them look anything close to the original pic posted on Tyree's website. Under all those different conditions you'd think someone would have one that might closely resemble the original. When I was at Paletta's house he said he got a frag from Leng Sy from the original colony, he was 100% sure it had died. He said he never fragged it for anyone because it never grew. Now, 3 years ago Leng Sy was at Paletta's house and asked Mike if the green cap with the purple rim was his. So now the story goes that Leng Sy has confirmed that Paletta's colony is the original. However since Paletta is sure it died it can't be the case. Mike said when I bought it "I'm not sure it's the original but I'll sell you a piece of it". I paid $75 for a dime size piece. Either way, all the "Leng Sy caps going around are not the real thing. Nothing matches other then green with purple rim and slight green polyps. The original had a thick purple rim, bright green polyps, green body and weird nodules all over. They're all look a likes and people are trying to make them more expensive because of an unverified name. Believe what you want but in the end the real Leng Sy cap is gone so we never will really know. George
  20. I have 9 female Squimpinnis Anthias and 1 male in my 280g. The female always school together and the male keeps them together. They can be expensive to create a school at about $30 each for females. George
  21. I have a 40g Oceanic Stretched Hex that I had drilled a few years ago. Not tempered. George
  22. I have 6 in a 280g. I have purple, blonde naso, convict, cheveron, tomini, hippo. George
  23. Solar wrasse are much more peaceful. Much better fairy wrasse for a community tank. Very pretty too and should keep it's color. I have one of those too for a few years now. George
  24. I've had one for about 18 months. Very aggressive fairy wrasse. It will loose some of it's coloration and become mostly blue with spots. You'll have to be careful when adding other fairy wrasses with this one. George
  25. The Ocean Runner pump is just a recirculating pump with a venturi. You will need a small powerhead to force water into the skimmer. I used a MJ250 with a piece of hose on the outlet. Good skimmer. George
