DDiver April 13, 2009 April 13, 2009 i need some advice from the chalice experts..i'm thinking about fragging a mini tyree red watermelon chalice colony but have never fragged any chalices before so i need to know the dos and don'ts... what i think i've gathered so far... use razor blade? frag should contain at least 1 mouth? and how long does it take a frag to heal? any suggestions/input would be appreciated..
ReeferMan April 13, 2009 April 13, 2009 If you give me a peice i will do it for you! haha Dremel works best. I would do at least one eye. and give it a couple weeks to heal
Sikryd April 13, 2009 April 13, 2009 Diamond dremel blade is best since it is thin. Also don't let it get hot if possible. Slow wins everytime. Razorblade on any flesh if you can't call all the way through. Start on the underside of the chalice so the junk collects on it and not the top side flesh. I just did one of mine after cruisin' over to Chris's to watch him do it a few weeks ago. How many eyes does the small one have? If its only a couple I wouldn't risk it personally. Should take about a week to heal, some more, some less depending on each piece.
lanman April 13, 2009 April 13, 2009 Agree that a tile saw takes too big a kerf to use it on a small specimen. Dremel diamond bit is much better. Some chalices really hate being cut. The frags may shrivel and die - or the flesh just separates rom the base. Even if it lives, it can be several weeks before you start to see new growth. Others are much easier. Also agree with cutting the bottom first, and keeping things cool. If it is a thick-fleshed chalice, you can get a TON of slime when you cut the flesh. Have fun!! bob
Leishman April 13, 2009 April 13, 2009 (edited) Dremel diamond blade from the base. Razor through flesh on top. Use a baster to blow slime off cut edges. You do NOT need an eye on each frag, that is a myth. Edited April 13, 2009 by Leishman
DDiver April 13, 2009 Author April 13, 2009 (edited) What if it is on a frag disc?could I somehow pry it off the frag disc or better off slicin through the disc? It's only got 5 eyes so I guess it's still a frag itself...should I not risk fragging and possibly killing it? Edited April 13, 2009 by DDiver
reefmontalvo April 13, 2009 April 13, 2009 Dude Id wait till you have like 20 or more eyes before you start fragging. Your trying to frag a frag.

It's only got 5 eyes so I guess it's still a frag itself...should I not risk fragging and possibly killing it? Is it the Tyree LE Alien Eye watermelon chalice? If so - you will want a frag of at least 1" x 1", and expect that to recede a bit on the edges before it starts growing back. Agree with the esteemed Mr. Leishman - you don't NEED any eyes. However, the eyes seem to be 'stuck' better than the rest of it, so even if flesh falls off, the eyes seem to hang in there and start growing back. You can breathe again when you start seeing green around the edges.. (two of my three frags SEEM to be surviving - but I'm waiting for the green) bob
DDiver April 13, 2009 Author April 13, 2009 (edited) LE Red Watermelon..I'm not a chalice expert but what is the difference between that and 'alien eye'?I thought that the term refers to when the mouth of it opened(the black slit) looks like an alien eye...then wouldn't that technically make them all alien eyes? I will just wait til it gets bigger I guess..don't wanna frag it and have it die on me.. Edited April 13, 2009 by DDiver
