jamesbuf June 21, 2006 June 21, 2006 Has anyone ever used the product called PurpleUp? It claims to help promote coraline growth better than just calcium alone. Congressional aquarium tried to sell me some for $24, but i found the same thing online for just 11.99. Its about the same price as the Kent liquid calcium so I guess its worth a shot, unless somebody on here had a bad experience with it. Thanks everyone. James
Lee Stearns June 21, 2006 June 21, 2006 There is an old salt water saying- never put anything into your tank that you can not measure for. That being said there are hundreds of concoctions that people will sell you to speed up this or replace that element ect. The marine aquarist have a second sayng that nothing good happens fast- if you have LR in the tank them you have Coraline and in time it will do well with a lrge dose o patience. Boosting calcium will speed it up a bit and depending on your light intensity one variety or another will take off. kalk is all you will need while maintaining PH balance until your sps or LPS take off- then you might need additional calcium- till then enjoy trip.

James James, I have used Purple up with good results. I believe is is a liquid calcium and Iodine, we sell it for I think 11.99 as well. John

jamesbuf June 21, 2006 Author June 21, 2006 I figure it wouldn't hurt to try a bottle of it. I do already have some coraline growing in certain places, but I was curious to know if coraline will grow under/over areas where there is nusaince algae already growing?? Also, I was curious to know if that social thing this weekend only applies to people who have corals to trade? I'm gonna be over in VA picking up some liverock on Saturday and I was hoping to stop by and check the place out.

It is not just for members or trades. You will meet alot of people and learn alot from everyone you talk to. Come on out! Everyone will get a name tag so you can put names to faces.

John I obtained two bottles from MACNA. It did grow Coraline algae faster in my tank. But not on the rocks on the Glass. So I won't use it again. -B
cbashaw June 21, 2006 June 21, 2006 I used Purple Up for about a month and it worked good but I had trouble keeping my PH and Alk stable. I switched to B-Ionic and it works just as good for promoting Coralline growth IMHO but it also helps keep my PH and Alk stable.
flowerseller June 21, 2006 June 21, 2006 If you do not know your water parmeters, wait until you do, and understand them. re-read the sixth post, (good advise) and consider bringing some water to be tested for ALK & CA. Unless you have a high calcium demand, coraline will grow very well with consistant water exchanges and higher watt 03 (purple) lighting. Re-read the second post in this thread, very solid advise. There's plenty of better balanced additives with all the ingredients listed.
jamesbuf June 21, 2006 Author June 21, 2006 I agree with not adding in anything that might mess up water parameters. It claims to have just calcium, iodine, and a couple other trace elements. I only have a couple mushrooms and some polys, remember I have a FOWLR. I just want my rock to look better. It is the actinic light that makes the coraline grow right?? Also, I have a 6 bulb T5 strip on my 125. Its almost time to buy some new bulbs. What would be a good bulb combination?? I have 2 plugs by the way that turn on 2 or 4 or all six, so what I usually do now if have my 2 actinic bulbs turn on around 90minutes before the 4 white bulbs kick in and 45 minutes after the whites cut off. I think my fixture originally came with 2 6500K and 2 10K bulbs. Should I forgo the 6500K and just stick to 10K. Or maybe add another actinic that would come on with the whites??? Any help is always appreciated. I've read alot about kalk, but wouldn't it be overkill when I'm really just wanting more coraline? I'll probably never get into the harder to keep corals anyways. Too expensive, and again I'm in it for the fish.
Guest alex wlazlak June 23, 2006 June 23, 2006 i used it too and it worked wonders. dont overdose it.
