Drilling upright tank

Recommended Posts

Has anyone drilled an upright tank? This is for a 125 gallon so moving it around is a pain. It'd be a lot easier to leave it on the stand (empty) and drill from the inside out. Plus I can trickle water over for cooling and the tank will catch it all.

Any thoughts or cautionary tales?

Yes. Four holes drilled upright from the outside of the tank. Apply tape to the back side of the glass to hold the blank as it's cut out. Toss a towel in the tank to catch the blank if it does fall. You want to spray water on the bit as you go. I took a water bottle and poked several holes in the cap. You could also just use a spray bottle. The idea is to spray a little water to lubricate, cool and flush debris from the area while grinding the hole. Give it a spray every ten seconds or so and it will be fine.

Here's a video that I just found that illustrates what I was describing:

Take your time. It's easy. Just make sure that the panel is not tempered and it should go smoothly if you take your time and use a good bit.
