Guest Amber Nussbaum April 12, 2004 April 12, 2004 I'm coming up to the meeting on Saturday, and would like to go to a Home Depot in the area to pick up some Southdown. Do you guys know if any stores in the area carry it? Or does anyone have some extra I could buy from them? Thanks a ton, Amber
ErikS April 12, 2004 April 12, 2004 A couple of pages back there was a discussion about availability, it's now called OldCastle. How much do you need?
Guest Amber Nussbaum April 12, 2004 April 12, 2004 I'd like at least 100 lbs. Preferably 150 lbs.. so I can have some leftover for a nano tank I plan on setting up in the future. Any clue where I can get some? I called exotic aquatics and they don't have any (even though they say they do on their website). Thanks.
gastone April 12, 2004 April 12, 2004 Amber, the Home Depot in Fredericksburg (right off of 95) usually carries it. I had the sku # about a year ago when I went through holy heck trying to locate some. I'll see if I can hunt it down. Garrett.
Guest Amber Nussbaum April 12, 2004 April 12, 2004 I have the SKU number. It's 578-819. How far is that from where the meeting is being held? I don't mind driving, but I wanna make sure I have enough time.. Thanks.
gastone April 12, 2004 April 12, 2004 It's nowhere close to the meeting, but it is right on the way for you at about 1/10th of a mile off of 95. Assuming that you'll be coming up 95.
Guest Amber Nussbaum April 12, 2004 April 12, 2004 Awesome, I just called the HD in Fredericksburg and they have something like 300 bags of it. The guy went and checked and said it's the blue and red package, tropical sand. I sure hope it's the right stuff and I'm not getting my hopes up for nothing haha. But yeah, it's right on the way. I'll be stopping by before the meeting. Thanks for the help! Amber
Guest reeffoto April 12, 2004 April 12, 2004 Amber, That is the right stuff. Blue and red bag. Most Home Depots up here have it.
Guest Amber Nussbaum April 12, 2004 April 12, 2004 Awesome. I'm excited. To get a DSB from local fish store sand, it would of cost me around $130. Whew. I have some large grain "reef grade" sand in there now.. but Dr. Shimek told me it's really too large to function as a DSB.. so I'm scooping most of it out and putting the southdown in. Should be a fun task removing all my LR and re-aquascaping afterward. Haha NOT! Oh well might as well do it right, right? Thanks for your help, guys.
flowerseller April 13, 2004 April 13, 2004 Amber, Consider putting some rock down first (before the DSB) to act as footings for the rock structure. (your creation of rocks) Then when you get some diggers you won't have a rock slide from a pocket they dig out causing the rocks to shift.
Guest Amber Nussbaum April 13, 2004 April 13, 2004 I was thinking of using some PVC pipes as supports, or if that doesn't work, just setting the rock on the bottom of the tank and piling sand around it. one of the reasons I'm doing this is for more stability, cause I'm thinking of getting a jawfish. Thanks for the advice!
Dell April 13, 2004 April 13, 2004 Hey, Sorry to butt in on this but does anyone know of South Down sand in the VA area? Thanks, Dell
ErikS April 13, 2004 April 13, 2004 See above, that's Fredricksburg. Most of the HD in NOVA have the stuff, where exactly in VA?
Dell April 13, 2004 April 13, 2004 Hey, I always get confused between Fredricksburg and Fredrick....sorry about that!! I am in Old Town close to 95/495. Dell
ErikS April 13, 2004 April 13, 2004 I am in Old Town close to 95/495. Don't hold me to it but I thought I read that the Springfield HD had/has some (across from the mall, near the metro station). With the sku you can call ahead & see if they have it. How many lbs of it per bag? 50 - I forget the price, was something like $3.89 last time I bought some.
Guest Amber Nussbaum April 13, 2004 April 13, 2004 Yeah but the bags are only like $5. You could have some left over in case you ever start another tank or whatever.
Guest goblinshark April 13, 2004 April 13, 2004 Amber, then do ya think u could plz pick me up a bag if ur going before the meeting, ill pay for it at the meeting.... i would greatly apreciate it. I f u can dont worry about it. Thanks, Ben
peacetypes April 13, 2004 April 13, 2004 Ben you should have told me that you needed some they have it by the pallets up here Robert
Jon Lazar April 17, 2004 April 17, 2004 I stopped by the HD in Fredericksburg, but couldn't find sand that looks like southdown. Has anyone made a positive sighting? Happy reefing, Jon
Guest Amber Nussbaum April 17, 2004 April 17, 2004 Aw crap.. for real? I just talked to them the other day. Hey guys.. where can I go.. I need to know soon so I can go tomorrow. I'm making a drive up from Norfolk.
Jon Lazar April 24, 2004 April 24, 2004 Has anyone had a positive sighting of southdown or old castle sand lately? I've checked the HD in Fredericksburg and Stafford, the Lowes in Fredericksburg, and the Wal Marts in Fredericksburg and Stafford. Happy reefing, Jon
GaryL April 25, 2004 April 25, 2004 i wil check a local sand place to see what type of sand they have, Gary
GaryL April 25, 2004 April 25, 2004 i was doing some internet research and found this address Virginia Fish Safari 2029 Lynnhaven Parkway, #550 Virginia Beach, VA 23456 757 416-1600 www.purearagonite.com it was at this site and they claim to sell aragonite sand. i would hate to see what they are selling it for but it is close for some i guess.
