SandJ December 12, 2015 December 12, 2015 Kinda looks like Uronema Marinum. Has it been in the same tank/water system as any chromis?
monkiboy December 13, 2015 December 13, 2015 Can anyone help me to ID what this anthias has?hi milton, the photo looks like a bacterial infection; likely a cut or lesion that became infected. this is a postmortem photo, yes? in this photo on my screen the lesion looks to be brown-colored. do you know if it had a different color when the fish was still alive- possibly red or white? knowing the above will help to differentiate/pin-point the strain of bacterium which caused the infection, whether it is gram-positive or negative, and how transmissible it is to other fish. lastly, how long did the anthias have the lesion before dying?
monkiboy December 13, 2015 December 13, 2015 Kinda looks like Uronema Marinum. Has it been in the same tank/water system as any chromis?you go the right idea with how prevalent uronema is with chromis. if it was uronema there would likely be more than one lesion and it would be reddish-colored. also, like you suggested, uronema seems to be pretty exclusive to chromis and other members of the damsel family including clownfish.
menglish December 13, 2015 Author December 13, 2015 Thanks for responding. I too thought it was uronema. At the time i purchased them (5), they were not held with any chromis. I did loose a second fish but not from the same illness. The remaining 3 anthias looked fine and are eating well. I first noticed it about a week ago. It started as a dark spot on the fish that was under the skin. It got swollen as time went by. At the time of this pic, it looked like the lesion burst. The tissue looked rotten and brown. This was the only lesion on the fish. I was certainly not prepare for this. The only meds i have on hand is copper. I reckon i need to keep some other meds in my chess. Any suggestions? Much thanks

Any suggestions? based on the observations you have shared it sounds like an internal infection that ruptured from the inside out. being it was internal, i would find it unlikely if your other fish are at risk. that being said, yes, i would always keep some antibiotics on hand just in case. good options are kanamycin/kanaplex and/or furan-2 which typically are great used together. i know this is a newer set up but if you have a UV, this would be a good time to get it going. hope this helps - g'luck, sir.
menglish December 14, 2015 Author December 14, 2015 I do have a 10G QT tank that i am using. I do have a UV plumbed in but unfortunately, it is not ready to go. I have to move the electrical outlet as it is just below where the UV is. I do not want to run any water just above an electrical outlet. Just in case of leaks. Thanks for the info all.
monkiboy December 14, 2015 December 14, 2015 (edited) I believe this is a reef not a fowlr so you will also need seachem focus (the binder) to go with the kanamycin if symptoms show on any of the other fish. the focus will bind the antibiotic to food and prevents it from leaching out into the water column. thus, making it essentially reef safe.
