Squishie89 September 10, 2015 September 10, 2015 Well I feel like patting myself on the back for taking the time and money to set up a coral quarantine tank. A few corals have algae, even my scoly has an aiptasia polyp. Nice to know none of this crap will make it into my display. What is the best way of getting rid of algae on frag plugs or skeletons? I was thinking of using H202 and squirting it directly onto the algae, doing my best to avoid any coral tissue. And for the aip I was going to smother it in super glue. Would love some feedback or better suggestions, thanks guys.
WilRams September 10, 2015 September 10, 2015 For anything minus SPS I have had good luck with a peroxide dip and scrubing the plug with a toothbrush as best I can. I thought I over did it once with some zoas when I went too heavy on the peroxide but everything bounced back looking better then ever. As for my sps I just scrub the plug as best I can even though I know what I should really be doing is removing and glueing onto a new plug.
AlanM September 10, 2015 September 10, 2015 I had some bryopsis once in some zoas. I pulled them out of the water into a solo cup of saltwater and then fairly carefully squirted full strength peroxide on the bryopsis with them out of the water using an aiptasia-X syringe. When they are in air the polyps are closed which protects them from the peroxide, I think. After carefully picking the bryo off with tweezers I put them back in the tank. They were ticked for two days, but after a while were fine. I'd think maybe you could do the same with the scoly and SPS? Just try not to drip the peroxide on the tissue and give it a swish in a cup of saltwater before turning it over (to avoid the peroxide from running along the coral and dripping off after squirting). Marco may be able to give suggestions too, because I think he carefully goes over the coral frags he gets and puts into quarantine to avoid pests.
YHSublime September 10, 2015 September 10, 2015 What type of algae? Hair algae? I would just manually remove it, and not worry about it to much. You can probably get the aiptasia with some joes juice or aiptasia x.
