Reefer_Madness May 18, 2015 May 18, 2015 Just like any animal, there is always the bad apple. I have(had) a really nice 6" green stylo colony that I have had for about 3 years. To me, it was my "show piece". I really took pride in the colony. When I upgraded to my new 60g cube, I positioned my aqua scape to be sure my stylo had a good spot.Well....I had some hair algae pop up. I did what I have always done when I get hair algae....I picked up a couple of emerald crabs. Well...one was of them tore up my Beautiful stylo. To the point that I'm not sure what I am going to do with it. I assume it won't recover. I have had lots of emerald crabs over the years, but none have gone rogue like this. He also ate the tips off of my Red Dragon.....RIP poor stylophora....I'm sorry I let you down....See pics. I'll try to find a "before" picBen
XxTech MoneyxX May 18, 2015 May 18, 2015 I have one that eats coral too! He now lives in my nano ALONE! Not sure what to do with him now that I want to stock the nano!!?? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reefer_Madness May 18, 2015 Author May 18, 2015 Yep. I am sure. I saw him eat his last meal.....of stylophora.
WilRams May 18, 2015 May 18, 2015 Yikes I have 2 in my frag tank! So far everything looks fine. It might be off to the sump until needed to be safe.
smallreef May 18, 2015 May 18, 2015 Part of it is they find a little algae... And they seems to start and they can't stop... I had one strand on some new zoas I got and my ruby emerald crab pulled that off... But then kept eating the zoas, lol while I thought about removing him, he hasn't done it again... So I'm guessing he just got carried away? You just have a much larger area for him to get carried away :(
gmerek2 May 18, 2015 May 18, 2015 Put a beer glass in there with a piece of shrimp in bottom. They go in and can't grip out. You may be able to save that stylo with time
Reefer_Madness May 18, 2015 Author May 18, 2015 (edited) gmerek2 - I got him out of there. I actually pulled his buddy out as well. His buddy didn't cause any problems, so I put him in my frag tank. I'll keep an eye on him. It looks like some of the stylo will come back, but a lot of it is beyond coming back. I may just put a frag in the middle of the dead spot and create a very interesting coral formation. smallreef - I think you are right. The hair algae outbreak was right next to the stylo. He did start eating the hair algae, but moved on to the stylo and kept going. Edited May 18, 2015 by Reefer_Madness
treesprite May 18, 2015 May 18, 2015 I lost sps to an emerald crab in the past, as well as a couple small fish who dared to swim into the cave where the crab trapped them (that crab was very easy to catch - just dangle a piece of dead fish on a string and the monster came out of the cave and latched on to get pulled out of the tank). I will not put emerald crabs in a tank with sps or small fish.
Rob A May 18, 2015 May 18, 2015 I had one run into his cave clutching a piece of birdsnest like he was playing capture the flag (or frag). Don't know if it was going to be a snack or a decoration.

If he had fingers he would have been giving me the bird. Edited May 18, 2015 by Reefer_Madness
Reefer_Madness May 20, 2015 Author May 20, 2015 Looks like some of my stylo could come back. Pealed the skin off, but there is still some life in there.
WilRams May 20, 2015 May 20, 2015 Good luck! Hopefully some of it pulls through. I put both my emeralds in the sump last night after reading this thread.
Reefer_Madness June 2, 2015 Author June 2, 2015 (edited) Thanks for all the good juju, but my stylo did not make it. Such a bummer. Actually since that was my only real colony and the rest of my corals are little sticks, I am going to try and find a colony on the FS forum to fill the void. Buying a colony or mini colony is such a newb thing to do, but I'm going to do it anyway.... Edited June 2, 2015 by Reefer_Madness
