Hello I'm thinking about purchasing a hippo tang from petco he is about 2 in long looks active a little Pail. I would like to see if someone can QT him a a few weeks to make sure he doesn't have ick I just wanted to take advantage of the weekend sale. I didn't have time to build a qt tank missing a filter. Any suggestions would be greatful I'm in Gainesville I haven't purchased it but I sure he won't last too long there

You would do best to buy your fish from a vendor that already qt's their stock. You will be hard pressed to find someone that would assume the risk of QT'ing a fish you bough elsewhere.

That being said, they stress easily, usually get put in to small tanks, and are pooping machines. Also, in my experience, the hippo tangs are the secret tank bullies. Just something to think about.

I've received fish from more than one LFS who "quarantines" their fish with ich, and I've received some fish without it.  I've also received fish from Petco with ich, and some without it.

You should QT fish no matter where they come from, and don't buy for one second that a LFS that has a "quarantine" process will guarantee you are receiving an ich-free fish.  That's simply not true.

You can setup a very cheap 10g QT tank easier than you might think.

i have a few in treatment now. if interested, shoot me a PM.

ryan makes some good points. if you decide to qt yourself, be sure to follow a protocol that ensures your best success with the optimal health of the animal. if buying from a place that will prophylactically treat for you, be sure you are familiar with their protocol so you know what you are really getting in the end.

if any of this is over your head or simply need sound/scientifically proven guidance on accomplishing this yourself, feel feel to PM and I'd be glad to help, sir.

buy the fish, throw in tank, make sure it eats. drink a beer and enjoy the tank.

Good one. This is what I feel sometimes...make sure they eat and you provide good quality food...they will do just fine.
