What do we think about my it2040 lights on it? Will it be enough? Should I try it out for a bit and watch my corals closely? Any input would be helpful.

Thanks,

David

If you still have the optics on it you could try and take them off to get a better light spread. I really think you will need two for coverage

+1. These are very powerful LED's...but you might need two of them...I have 2 of these on my 72 gallon 4ft long tank.

If the 90 is a 48" long tank, it isnt going to remotely cover it. Getting coverage over a 36" tank isnt even adequate. Two would give you good coverage however.

Thanks guys. That's what I was thinking myself but wasnt ready to admit it without the backup.

Yea, it sucks having to shell out the money for another fixture. I'm at the absolute max for the Photon24 on my 36" tank. It works out decent and creates some areas of lower light in the event I want to have something like that along the outside of the tank.

Madweazl, how're you liking the photon24 so far? I'm in the same boat as the poster and will be upgrading to a 48" and am currently using a single reefbreeders superlux LED over a 40B. I'm debating whether to purchase a second superlux or upgrade and purchase a photon24 as a second light. Has the controller been worth the extra cash so far?

The controller works pretty well. Initial setup takes some time and the remote isnt very good if you're trying to use it while sitting down (the light emitting from the fixture interferes with the IR remote LOL). Once you get it dialed in it works well though. I'd rather have full control from something like a RA or Apex but it's tough to beat this setup for the money. I've had good results with the fixture thus far but I havent had any of the super colorful SPS either. My monti cap grew like a weed with this lighting along with a green BTA. The two other SPS kept their color and were growing I didnt have themlong enough to provide any long term feedback (took the tank down when we moved from Japan to here).

I thought the SuperLux had a controller?

That makes sense and will probably be the reason I 'splurge' and pick up the photon over a second superlux (everything is so darned expensive), which has a built-in timer and manual light intensity settings, but no controller. So the light goes from off to full daylight bulbs for an hour or two before full actinics kick in. It would be nice to have at least half of the tank be able to ramp up and down, especially since I've picked up some sps that seem to get stressed by the sudden light extremes.

So I guess the next question I would have is, will my light penetrate deep enough into the water? I guess for initial setup I could use it and not have a full coverage? Say use just this until I get another light or upgrade to the larger one?

Initially I'm only transferring over the corals from the 37 and I could just keep those in the center part of the tank.

You wont have an issue with penetration, just coverage. Might be a better idea to mount the light to one side like it would if you had two and start the aquascape accordingly so you can move forward in a modular fashion.

I like that idea. Just thinking it might look a little weird at first. Also don't know how the end layout will look.
