edress714 January 17, 2015 January 17, 2015 So almost 6 months in and out of no where I get green algae on the glass and starting to pop up all over the rocks. I've always usedan tap water but never got this growth and how quick it grows after scraping off. All parameters checked and perfect and stable I just cleaned my powerheads to make sure circulation is not the problem. Is this normal? Is it time for rodi water?
Crob5965 January 17, 2015 January 17, 2015 well I doulbt if anyone on any forum will tell you that RODI is not a good idea, I have read a number of threads debating lighting, sump vs canister or HOB and whether or not a skimmer is really needed, but as far as where you get your water, the answer is always use RODI
DuffyGeos January 17, 2015 January 17, 2015 Can go wrong with RO/DI. What type lighting and how long do you run them?
edress714 January 17, 2015 Author January 17, 2015 It's just odd in 6 months it decides to grow now. I have evergrows. Blues go on from 10-10 and whites 12-8. Too much?
edress714 January 17, 2015 Author January 17, 2015 You know what. When I went on vacation for 5 days that's when I got the timers and set them to the hours I have them. Came back and the tank glass was all green. Ever since it's been growing daily on the glass. What should I have them on? Thanks guys

Crob5965 January 17, 2015 January 17, 2015 mine run about 9 hrs for whites and 11hrs for blues, I have algae growth now, but that's mainly because I went away for 6 wks and didnt do a WC, I have started regular WC again and added a GFO and it has died off again
edress714 January 17, 2015 Author January 17, 2015 What is this whole vodka dosing lol I read about it but still confused. You literally put vodka in the tank water? And where do you put the gfo? In my canister or just in the tank water? (Noob questions lol)
gmerek2 January 17, 2015 January 17, 2015 Looks like you don't have a problem yet. Is it hair algae or just a silly green film that the snails eat? Anyhow Put GFO in the media reactor or some call it a GFO reactor. It works well but like anything else you have to be patient for the algae to starve out. RODI will help also.
edress714 January 17, 2015 Author January 17, 2015 Def not hair algae. I don't have a media reactor. Just running a fluval 406 and a hob ro skimmer.
gmerek2 January 17, 2015 January 17, 2015 I would have to see it closer and feel it but it doesn't look like a pest algae from here. It could even be green coralline algae which is good. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

(Noob questions lol) I bought a GFO reactor from BRS, but you could make on out of pretty much anything, you just need water to pas through it and back into your tank, a Maxijet powerhead works well. as far as Vodka dosing, yes you just put a little in your tank each day, I started out with about 3ml and went up 1-2ml per week until Nitrates came down then I started lowering Volume of Vodka until it started to go back up, then you have your magic # stick with that and it should help. I have a 90 gal tank with a 30gal sump so if your running a smaller end tank start with a very small amount, likewise if it's a big setup you can add a little extra

Just running a fluval 406 and a hob ro skimmer. yeah it doesn't look that bad, could just be tank maturing like Gmerek said, however I would still look into getting an RO/DI, I'm all about cutting corners but water quality to me is the most important thing.
zygote2k January 17, 2015 January 17, 2015 it's most likely higher phosphate in the tap water. If you were running a TDS meter on your r/o and recording the results, you'd see that TDS is higher in the summer and lower in the winter. You'd also monitor when the municipal water treatment plant uses Chloramines or other cleansing agents and notice how it affects TDS. Just watch and observe and don't change anything. Make sure you do regular water changes and keep parameters stable.
zygote2k January 17, 2015 January 17, 2015 you can use tap water, it's just slightly harder but many corals will live in it including SPS, clams, anemones.
edress714 January 21, 2015 Author January 21, 2015 So the glass growth decreased but the rock growth did not. Here is a better pic
edress714 January 21, 2015 Author January 21, 2015 Not sure what hair algae looks like but this guy has tiny hairs coming from it and moving around like my gsp. Not long tho, really short like half a cm
edress714 January 21, 2015 Author January 21, 2015 Here's the worst part of the tank. Got brown growth too.
s2nhle January 22, 2015 January 22, 2015 Very nice purple Coraline rock. The green algae I am not worry much but I also saw some brown algae that is very annoying.
