Md Reefer June 17, 2014 June 17, 2014 Hey fellow reefers i havent posted anything in a while. i have about 20lbs. Of live rock that i had started curing probably a year ago i havent done any water changes or nothing, i had forgot about it. But today i just looked at them and they are still fully submerged in water and no light has been in there for about a year. What do u think are they still good? Can they cure with no water changes? Thanks everyone!
YHSublime June 17, 2014 June 17, 2014 I think the salinity is probably enough out of norm to not support "live," if that's what you're asking. Just a guess.
Origami June 18, 2014 June 18, 2014 Well, I don't think that the rock is sterile, if that's what you're asking. If it's been sitting there a year, it's probably devoid of any dead and dying organics that would have fed and nurtured a healthy bacterial population during the initial "curing" process. That population has probably declined and is at stable levels now. Pull the rock out and give it the old sniff-test. If it smells clean, I'd consider starting a new tank with it and bringing it up relatively slowly. If it smells funky, I'd pull the rock, clean the barrel that you've had it in with bleach and water, and then re-cure the rock in new water with agitation and aeration.
