Caribbean Jake January 16, 2006 January 16, 2006 I have Anthelia for almost two years now and I deeply regret the day I added this pest into my tank. I have tried lime juice, pure lemon juice, vinegar, LIME paste, and a combination of all the above, but after few weeks the darn Anthelia re-apears on the same spto it was supposed to disapear. What have you done to control Anthelia? Besides never introducing it into your tank, what option do I have to control Anthelia or get rid of it at all? An NO, taking the rock work out and scrubbing or boiling is NOT an option. Your input, experience, and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Jacob
davelin315 January 17, 2006 January 17, 2006 I once had an urchin that in the process of eating algae mowed right over my xenia. Since it's in the xenid family, maybe you could isolate an urchin on it, say a pencil urchin which is carnivorous anyway? Or, maybe a chocolate chip star could handle it for you. I'm not sure of your ability to remove the rock from the tank or isolate it as you've said no boiling, so these might not work for you.
Lee Stearns January 17, 2006 January 17, 2006 Dartco -- you kill me-- I got a real chuckle out of that- Grav nick named me xenia killer as I have tried for two years to grow xenia in my main aquarium- no luck- even a large batch melts away over a period of a couple months- I have anthelia do like wise- though I have a small patch just holding its own in my nano cube. So Jake, other than giving it to me I just have no experience in trying to control it. Sounds like a good nutrient export for you- I use Capnella as a nutrient export- can't find anyone to take it so I just harvest and send to the soft coral heaven.
Sugar Magnolia January 17, 2006 January 17, 2006 When I was eradicating xenia from my tank a few years ago, I smeard a pretty thick glob of Joe's Juice mixed with kalk powder on it. Only a small portion tried to regrow and I hit that spot again and it never came back.
Caribbean Jake January 17, 2006 Author January 17, 2006 Adrienne Could you please go over details on how much you mixed, if you turned the power heads off, if you covered SPS, etc. ? I want to know more about what you did. Jacob
davelin315 January 17, 2006 January 17, 2006 Hey Jake, I think you meant to ask Adrienne, not me. You could always try a predatory crab as well. Maybe a large non-reef safe hermit? Again, isolation is the key to preserving the rest of your reef, though.
Jon Lazar January 18, 2006 January 18, 2006 Jake, Can you just tear it off? Mine comes off the rock pretty easily, and doesn't leave a lot of tissue behind like xenia does. Jon
Caribbean Jake January 18, 2006 Author January 18, 2006 Jon This is so slimy that I can't get a grip on it. even with the toothpick can't get it out.
