YHSublime January 29, 2014 January 29, 2014 I recently fragged some zoas off from my mini colonies that I have fragged many times before with great success. It has been about 2.5 weeks, and the original colonies are just starting to open up again. Most of the frags I made have not opened up yet, but are all in different locations than the original colonies. I don't think I did anything different this time, but was wondering how long others usually have to wait, and if anybody has ever had this issue?
DCReefer1964 January 29, 2014 January 29, 2014 (edited) That is the majic question. The time varies. I had Zoas that where doing ok in the 135 before the crack accured. Move every thing to the Rubbermaid under T-5s and POW they all seemed to thrive. Move a frag to your sump under the fuge light and lets see what happens. Remember you mother colony is just starting to open the babies will follow soon. What your RO water readings looking like Sir. Edited January 29, 2014 by DCReefer1964
YHSublime January 29, 2014 Author January 29, 2014 They were all doing OK before, that's the issue. They are slowly starting to open again, but it looks like YMMV. Last time I did this, I only had to wait about 2 days and everything bounced back. 0 TDS, I just replaced all my RO filters, and have made at least 80 gallons since.
YHSublime January 29, 2014 Author January 29, 2014 What zoas did you frag? I did the Strawberry wines I got from you. They were growing great, then I moved them, and nothing. I tried moving them into several different locations (including original location) to see if I could get them to open up again. I wish I never moved them to start with, they were doing great. Other zoas include gorilla nipples, and sunny d's.
YHSublime January 29, 2014 Author January 29, 2014 I've done hydrogen peroxide dips before for bryopsis, honestly , a toothbrush and a nsw dip did a better job IMO. That video references a bacteria, my zoas and palys are, as far as I know, doing fine. Just wondering why this time it's taking a super long time.
jaddc January 29, 2014 January 29, 2014 I posted it because if your freshly cut zoas are battling some bacteria or fungus then peroxide may be an easy thing to try.

Those can be finicky at times when fragged or moved around, they usually bounce back though. Those do better when you wait for the cleanest cut possible, they are the type that spreads from the other polyp pretty well which makes for easy fragging so you just have to wait on them. If they dont make it stop by and ill replace those for you.

Supreme Reefs January 31, 2014 January 31, 2014 I've only used lugols. What's the advantage of Kents? Lugols is a lot more concentrated, kents is less so you can leave them in there for a longer period of time. Its hard to find the correct ratio for lugols so its easy to stress them out by shocking them with too much iodine at once. Its better to do multiple lower amount than a single large amount of dosage.

I have placed a variety of zoas on a large clam shell, I want to grow them out!

That's good to know The very few frags I've cut so far I just put two drops in about a quart of water and mixed it real good. Just so that it's a hint of brown to the water. I read where someone didn't mix it enough and the iodine killed his coral so I was cautious. Edited January 31, 2014 by John Ford

Something about their mix...
