I'm wanting to build a glass frag tank that is 36x18x12 and had a couple of questions:

What sized glass should I use?

What is the best silicone that is readily available?

Should the sides rest on the bottom pane or should they surround it?

Thanks,

Steve

From a layman's perspective, I would think that a glass tank would need to have the side panes resting on the base, but since a glass tank requires a stand that has support only around the edges, I am not sure...

Do you have glass tank you can take a look at?  In terms of which silicone to use, I would think you'd just want to use pure silicone, perhaps the stuff that GE makes for aquariums.

Didn't you take apart a glass cages tank a few years back and examine how to put it back together again?  I think some of my info is pulled from that discussion...

Otherwise, maybe contact NAGA - he builds glass tanks as well.

thanks Dave.

I've seen glass tanks with the sides resting on the bottom and with the sides surrounding the bottom.  I've got some aquarium silicone but didn't know if there was some out there that was stronger than others.

My current plan is to use 1/2" glass and have the sides surround the bottom.

At lowes in the epoxy area you can find lock tite silicone that's aquarium safe. I used it in my sump and needed a jack hammer (not really but it was a pain the ass) to remove some glass after I messed up

I've got things figured out Eric. The trick is getting it up and running before momma has time to object.

I like your style

Lol, if she doesn't already object to your garage of greatness...I can't imagine her saying anything about one more small tank, lol

Most of the DIY plans I saw had the sides sitting on top of the bottom pane.  Doesn't mean it's right, but again, I'd take a peek at tank construction in commercial tanks and see how it is done.  Just go into your local store with a pry bar and a good cutting blade and strip the trim off to look!  ;)
