Duke November 2, 2013 November 2, 2013 Has anyone experienced using clams as a filtration? I just built my sump and haven't decided what should go in my refugium. Wanted to get some clams from the food market and put a few in the refugium. Or if anyone has any suggestions on what else I should put in my refugium, that would be great!

Coral Hind November 3, 2013 November 3, 2013 You can also just put colorful clams like Tridacna species in your tank instead of putting plain clams in your sump. I had some huge T. gigas clams in my old tank and they did a great job at filtering the water. Clams do consume a lot of calcium for their dense shells so if you add them watch your calcium levels and make adjustments.
gmerek2 November 3, 2013 November 3, 2013 I ended up getting one even though people said they will do little to nothing for nitrates (unless you buy hundreds) And they said most are cold water clams and won't live long. I got A Florida cleaner clams just for fun, still alive and healthy. Just one more cool organism for the tank and even if it is just a little filtration, I'll take it !

Coral Hind November 3, 2013 November 3, 2013 Have you noticed any growth rings on it yet? Fast grower?
gmerek2 November 3, 2013 November 3, 2013 Good question. I'll have to start paying more attention to the rings. Doesn't seem to be a fast grower though. I bought it at saltwaterfish . Com. Not happy with customer service there though.
