If you can move any rocks around before adding it the yellow belly may be less likely to be aggressive as it focuses on finding a new territory or sleeping spot. 

Also some articles call the orange shoulder aggressive and others as peaceful. What's been the experience of current and past owners?

I think the family of acanthurus is sometimes called aggressive as a whole. Just look at the powder blue for an example of fish that can be somewhat aggressive in that family.

I've had an orange shoulder (A. olivaceus) for about 3 or 4 years.  It is now about 7" (started @ 3-4")  and is the most peaceful tang of the 5 in my tank.
