Ne0eN October 26, 2005 October 26, 2005 Help, something's going on in my 60g reef tank. Two days ago I noticed one of my frogspawn's deflated (both heads) and brown mucus oozing out. Also on the same rock, a piece of brown Monti frag knocked over and also completely bleached out. I suspected my urchin (Echinometra mathaei) must have found a new grazing area, so I vacuumed out the mucus as much as I could, and took the monti frag out. Yesterday morning I noticed another frogspawn, on a different rock, one of the two heads starting to ooz brown mucus. I vacuumed it off and did 15% water change just in case. This morning - I see, the frogspawn still covered in mucus (one head still doing ok), my galaxy colony has some small dead spots, and my brain coral also has some mucky areas. Now that I think about, the galaxy has been extending its sweepers more and more each day. Could it reach my frogspawn 8 inches away??? Clownfish/Mike, is this why you traded it away? :wall: What else could be going on??? Here's a list of tank cohabitants: 2 false perc clowns 1 baby hippo tang 1 medium coral beauty 1 purple firefish 1 watchman goby 1 medium large emerald crab 1 coral banded shrimp 75 or so various hermit crabs 40 or so various snails 1 common urchin (echinometra mathaei) <-- hitchiker 1 rose BTA 1 BTA (not doing well) 2 frogspawn (now half on 1 left) Various zoos, xenia, polips, shrums 1 finger leather 1 kenya tree few small brown monti frags 1 colony GSP 1 brain 1 colony galaxy - anyone wanna trade this guy? -Rob
unninair October 26, 2005 October 26, 2005 Since the problem is spreading, did you check your water parameters? Unni
Ne0eN October 26, 2005 Author October 26, 2005 Since the problem is spreading, did you check your water parameters? Unni 43352 Yup, water parameters are as perfect as they can be: 79F / 1.025 sal / 8.3 pH /0 Ammonia / 0 Nitrite / <10 Nitrate -Rob

On a similar note, I had a torch melt down on me just this week too. One head was looking a bit pekid then all the sudden it got this film like covering then wham the other head was fine one evening and in 24 hours it was completely gone. But, it seems to be isolated to this one coral.
Sugar Magnolia October 26, 2005 October 26, 2005 Brown jellly infection? Galaxy's sweepers can get pretty long if it's kept in a higher flow area.
Ne0eN October 26, 2005 Author October 26, 2005 Just moved my Galaxy in the corner. We'll see what happens tomorrow am... -Rob
flowerseller October 26, 2005 October 26, 2005 The sweeper tenticals can easily reach that far. You can cut off the bad parts into the good tissue and hope for the best. Don't go crazy with water changes as you can create more of a problem with your ionic balance. Chemi Pure is not a bad idea hower just allow water to flow through it (passive flow) as opposed to pushing water through it.
Ne0eN October 29, 2005 Author October 29, 2005 The meltdown continues. I came back from a short business trip to find the rest of the remaining frogspawn covered in brown mucus, 80% of the brain dead and now some of polyps on one another rocks shriveled up. Fish seem to be ok. Could it be my BTA that's been bleached for over a month, finally dying and releasing some poison into the tank? My skimmer seems to be producing more skimmate, but considering all the die-off, I don't see a big difference. Should I just evacuate the whole tank? I'm running out of options. -Rob
Guest alex wlazlak October 29, 2005 October 29, 2005 could you get any pictures of this? im really sorry to hear about everything.
Folta October 29, 2005 October 29, 2005 Is it possible that something got into the water? Anybody that could have dropped something toxic in? Any fumes or anything near the tank? Have something on your hands without realizing maybe, and put your hands in the tank?

Have something on your hands without realizing maybe, and put your hands in the tank? 43671 Nope, no one else is around. No fumes. I like to think that my hands are usually clean when I work on the tank. The only other thing that's different in the past week or so - I had a case of excessive brown algae growing all over my cheato in the refugium, so I turned off its light to see if that controls it. The water flow through my refugium is something on the order of 10-20 gph. Very minimal. Well, I'm pretty much back to FOWLR at this point. The only thing that seems to be doing ok is the RBTA, GSP and Yellow Zoos. I cant seem to find two of my shrooms. :wall: -Rob
unninair October 29, 2005 October 29, 2005 Rob, Is your Anemone disintegrating?... if so take him out. If that is not the case, I dont think it is him. Please test your water daily to see if it is toxic for the fish. I dont have enough experience to suggest any other logical solution. Good luck man Unni
