motti April 13, 2013 April 13, 2013 The power head is pretty much the only place in my tank that algae grows now, once in a while I turn it off to let my lawnmower Benny clean it
Steve175 April 13, 2013 April 13, 2013 Take it out and soak it overnight in either vinegar or dilute muriatic acid (latter in paint area at Lowe's)
smallreef April 14, 2013 April 14, 2013 Diluted vinegar for a few hours works well to clean and kill algae...unless you think your poor blenny really needs it,lol
motti April 14, 2013 Author April 14, 2013 Haha that guy is a monster, cleaned everything out in few hours
Steve175 April 18, 2013 April 18, 2013 He's not gonna be able to clean the calcium carbonate build up: let him eat every 6 months then soak it overnight.
motti April 19, 2013 Author April 19, 2013 True, haven't thought about it. So what's the vinger mix? Just water mixed with vinger? Or all vinger ?
smallreef April 20, 2013 April 20, 2013 75 % vinegar and 25%water each...run or I guess you could just leave it set for 3 or 4 hours...no more than 8....
paul b April 20, 2013 April 20, 2013 Leave it alone, half my rocks are old powerheads, blenders, Oldsmobile transmissions and similar objects.
GraffitiSpotCorals April 20, 2013 April 20, 2013 I would suggest cleaning all equipment on a regular basis. This way you can SEE if the pump is running correctly and avoid any disasters. Anyways i would guess a clean powerhead performs better and will last longer in the long run. I would not spend 400 on a new powerhead just to throw it in the tank and let it clog up while the flow is diminished more and more from crud. If you let it sit forever, it will be harder to clean and easier to break.

smallreef April 20, 2013 April 20, 2013 I wonder if alka seltzer would do the same thing? Or those denture fizzy tablets? Hhrrrmmm experiment coming soon?
monkiboy April 20, 2013 April 20, 2013 That's pretty amazing, does it also smell like vineger? (my wife can't stand the vineger smell) yeah its cool stuff and a little goes a long way. no odor is present with its use.
