why not just a regular powerhead?

I've always used regular powerheads for my ATO system with great success but why do most hobbyist use Toms aqualifters?

I've used both and tended to use a maxijet powerhead before I switched to a peristaltic pump. Fitted with a quick connect adapter and 1/4" air tubing, the flow rate was never high enough to be a problem and the pump tended to last longer than an aqualifter.
