Sorry to blow up the "new to the forum" section. I'm looking for a type of snail that can flip itself over if it ends up on it's back. I only added 5 hermits and 5 snails to my 14 gallons, is that enough for a CUC?

Does anybody have so many they don't know what to do with them?

troucus snails can do that. i think your fine with 5/5. might want to do a conch to stir up the sand or a couple of nassarius snails, but with 14 gallons you don't want to many or they will starve.

i can probably help out, i have some Collumbellid. well pretty sure thats what they are and they breed like crazy in my reef, not sure about turning themselves over (i do find some that cant get out of my acro's and die)

hermits tend to kill snails and i usually only tend to keep a few or none at all depending on the tank and corals.

I've been adding LSP to my system like nobodies business, I'm actually running out of room. I put a rack in my nano just because I wanted to think about placement, and growth as I went along. That, and when I move over to my 40, I'll mount from there. I also really want to take my rockwork into consideration, I feel like currently, I have a lot of wasted rock underneath, and a huge area that doesn't get vacuumed during my water changes. This is where I feel like my CUC should be working hard. Also, my hermits troll all over the corals like nobody's business, but I don't think they're hurting anything, just scaveging.

If you have any extras left over when he's done, I'd love some.

+1 on this. CuC really depend on the nutrient load of the tank (amount you feed). Remember that you need to feed the CuC if they are not getting enough through "normal" cannels.

There was a great article in Coral Magazine about hermits a few years ago. It mentioned that if your hermits are active by day they are likely starving. Wild hermits do not move around during the day unless absolutely necessary as their defense strategy is actually to blend in with rubble and unoccupied shells.

HTH

I am not a big fan of hermit crabs. they always knock over corals, kill snails and steal their shells or fight among themselves in my tank not to mention stealing food from the mouths of my LPS.
