flooddc October 30, 2012 October 30, 2012 I raised this colony from a frag a year or so ago (growth quickly into a colony). A while ago, I notice some branched died, but recovered. About 3 days ago I noticed half of it were gone http://www.flickr.com/photos/10002234@N07/8139227554/in/photostream So I frag out 2 branches for safe keep. then the next day, almost completely wiped out. even the 2 frags http://www.flickr.com/photos/10002234@N07/8139227080/in/photostream today, as my light comes on, the whole colony is totally whited out except for the foot where some of the polyps remains. I have been checking water quality and the parameters are quite normal. I have not change anything. Only thing I did was a 20% water change last week. Can't figure out what going on, something must have got into the water (undetectable?) or bugs? Everything else in the tank are fine. Ahhhh!!!Bummer!!!
Incredible Corals October 30, 2012 October 30, 2012 Can you post your water parameters? Maybe it's something borderline not normal? Maybe a bad bucket of salt with super low alk or something? Do you see any fish or crabs around it?
Der ABT October 30, 2012 October 30, 2012 what kits you using to test, how old, do you have any other test you can double check said test with... check for stray current, buy a new test kit and go from there is what i would say also calibrate your refractometer
Steve175 October 30, 2012 October 30, 2012 Two very experienced reefers from CMAS have had recent unexplained RTN of SPS (both lost multiple colonies rapidly - one effecting half his tank - with no identifying source despite thorough a thorough investigation of both water chemistry and equipment); granted, we all have setbacks here and there but usually in the setting of a clear temp or Alk flux - both of these events (as would seem with yours) are uncomfortably unexplained. Anyone else had a similar type of event?
Der ABT October 30, 2012 October 30, 2012 Was ther any sliming or and signs of stress prior to the die off??? wonder if they treated the water pipes with something for winterising and it made its way thru the RO/DI When it happened to me i discoverd a AA battery had fallen in so it was an obvious culprit....freaking scares the crap outta me though.
steveoutlaw October 30, 2012 October 30, 2012 When you're sure your tank is ready, I have a large colony of that and will give you a frag.
flooddc October 30, 2012 Author October 30, 2012 Can you post your water parameters? Maybe it's something borderline not normal? Maybe a bad bucket of salt with super low alk or something? Do you see any fish or crabs around it? parameters are typical within normal range... ph: 8; temp:82; salinity: 1.025; Amo+Nitrite: undetected; NO3: 0.8; PO4: 0.1 (nothing unusual) ... Although, I notice my cleaner was picking on the colony (not sure if it picking bugs or eating the birdnest, but it would not have done much damage overnight) what kits you using to test, how old, do you have any other test you can double check said test with... check for stray current, buy a new test kit and go from there is what i would say also calibrate your refractometer I have both Red SEA tests and API. No Slim, just turned totally white over night.

countryboy October 30, 2012 October 30, 2012 I lost a large birdnest under the same circumstances, started dyeing and within a week it was dead. my water parametes checked out ok. Everything else is doing great. I had an anomnae that was moving around alot and I thought that is what got it. To this day I have trouble with birdnest but everything else is doing great
flooddc October 30, 2012 Author October 30, 2012 Taking a closer look, there a few tiny branches left on the colony. Hopefully, they all make it. And the journey continues. A little hope here.
Coral Hind October 31, 2012 October 31, 2012 Good luck with the remaining polyps, hopefully they can recover. If the other corals in the tank are fine it sounds like the coral got infected when you fragged it. Doing a quick dip in Revive, Pro Coral Cure, or short iodine mix dip after fragging helps to prevent infections. Also make sure the tools you using to frag with are clean. Wash before using and even pour iodine over then rinse to sterilize.
