Huly September 13, 2012 September 13, 2012 Hi My husband and I are looking for an automatic top off unit for our Red Sea Max 250. We were originally told that Tunze is the best for a RSM but a friend on this board reccomended we talk to y'all. We are very new to the hobby and were wondering is your system compatible to ours? Would you reccomend your product for this set up or not? I know you are not only a member but a vendor but being so new to the hobby we need your wisdom. RSM 250 Specs: http://www.redseamax.com/redseamax/250temp/redseamax/red_sea_max_specs250.html Thank you!
epleeds September 13, 2012 September 13, 2012 (edited) tunze is a great product, but also look at the AVAST top off unit. I have two on different tanks and they are awesome, plus they are half the cost of Tunze and their a local vendor. Edited September 13, 2012 by epleeds
ctenophore September 13, 2012 September 13, 2012 Hi Huly, What are the dimensions of the opening in the back? I'm guessing it's large enough to fit our nano magnet mount inside. Nano bracket dimensions: 2-3/8" front to back x 2-5/8" wide (excluding external magnet half, 5/8" thick) Photo: http://www.avastmarine.com/ssc/images/store/autotopoff3_magmounts_lg.png (The one on the top left) The switchbox will need to be plugged in elsewhere, as it won't fit in the RSM's plug bar. Then, you'll just need to find a small water pump and a place to store a water reservoir. A 5 gallon bucket works well. Put the small pump in the bucket, run tubing up to the compression fitting on the magnet holder, and plug the pump into the switchbox. The magnet holder and sensor tube should be placed in the compartment where the water level changes as water evaporates. I'm not sure if this is the left or right chamber on the RSM. Let me know if this helps. Justin

Huly September 13, 2012 Author September 13, 2012 I am running the avast ATO and it works flawlessly. Is it running on a RSM?
Origami September 13, 2012 September 13, 2012 I used an Avast ATO on the smaller RSM120 without problem. The key with any ATO is that the level sensor has to be in a spot that shows the effect of evaporation. In your setup, that's either chamber 1 or 3 (on the left and right sides). As I recall, your husband puts bagged media in the left chamber from time to time. Thus, it might be more convenient for your use to put the level sensor in the right hand chamber that sees less activity. I have an "spare" Avast ATO at home and, when I stop by to bring that hammer frag, I'll bring it along to show you how it works.
